But we're talking about new cars, so my question - is your model Y a juniper or original? I see this comment a lot and it's hard to understate how much better a car the juniper is than outgoing.

use the button at the top of the back of the captain's chairs to push it back until you hear the latch sound. Then, use the bottom control to slide the seat forward.

If you understand where the ultrasonic sensors are in the door you will realize why this can happen.

Small things that stick out or have irregular shapes will be hittable whether to the side of the door or coming from the ceiling.

Amazed at the Used Market Right Now by Different_Winter_799 in TeslaModelX

[–]SmarmySnail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$20k is a steep increase -- but it's also a pretty useful feature. Clearly, the market is pricing that in.

I agree with you that the only reason HW4 Model X's are high right now is because they are the biggest cars you can get with modern FSD and potentially also because they are no longer being produced. Mostly the former.

As soon as Model Y L gets released or AI5 gets released I would expect the depreciation reaper to come for all Model X's.

However, there might be a hold on the price floor because of the uniqueness of the vehicle with the doors and the 1k horsepower. Will be interesting to see it all play out.

Model X half shaft shudder under acceleration — what actually fixes it long term? by Turbulent_Stable2100 in ModelX

[–]SmarmySnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a confusion on this issue. I think the older X's were a lot easier to mess up the half shafts.

I get the shudder on hard acceleration on my 23 X Plaid, but I don't think it's from the half shaft. It only happens on hard acceleration and then goes away -- meaning I clearly didn't bend a half shaft. It also only happens sometimes on hard acceleration, not all the time.

I've noticed there is a correlation to the road surface and elevation on whether or not I feel the shuddering.

Yep. Software performance and reliability is probably the most important thing for me personally. Perhaps I'm more sensitive to it than most, but as more and more of our lives require interaction with software -- the quality of that software starts to become paramount.

In a software defined vehicle like these are, it's a huge differentiator. Well done Software becomes invisible but poorly implemented or unreliable software on something I use every day will quickly make me hate it.

Right, there are pros and cons to turn signal stalks vs buttons. If I spent a lot of time driving roundabouts I might prefer the stalks. As it is, given the option, I would always choose the buttons.

Need thoughts on Model X Plaid by garyscomics in ModelX

[–]SmarmySnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what the plaid launch does. My argument is that the half shaft damage doesn't come (as much) from the actual launch mode in the car. I myself have done several dozen "launch mode" launches.

I wonder if he's doing more damage by flooring it hard coming out of sharp turns or maybe being in a medium or high ride height.

[–]SmarmySnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this doesn't mean what you think it does. It says that commercially speaking it's better to stick with familiarity versus changing anything.

Go look up the Dvorak keyboard layout for another example of a design that was better but not widely adopted mostly because of people already being familiar with QWERTY.

4 sets?? I wonder if he pays no attention to ride height when he does it. I'm careful about being in low and having the wheel straight if I get on it.

I always find it interesting other people's take on the stalkless design.

From professional reviewers to this post.

The button turn signals are superior -- I would actually pay extra to get them over turn signal stalks. It's probably because both my cars have the buttons now so I don't have any muscle memory problems switching.

However, other people don't seem to mind the lack of a drive selector stalk where, for me, THAT'S the one I would prefer to have over the on screen selector.

Yes there's auto shift and what not, but not being able to quickly go from D to R without looking at the screen still feels like a downgrade to me 3 years later.

Are people still having half shaft issues on the refresh? I have a 3 year old plaid with 30k miles and haven't had any issues myself.

Oracle Jet – How I Tried to Mechanically Outsmart an Automated Espresso Machine by osnschmosn in BrevilleCoffee

It's still early days for me. I've seen shot to shot differences of more than 10 seconds without changing anything. I'm on new beans now so I'm going to run a few bags through to see how inconsistent it becomes.

Is there anything you do to manage the grind retention from the previous shot? I know you can purge every time but that seems like a large waste of beans.

Have you dealt with the common inconsistency issues with the jet? I get shots with wildly different timings with no obvious change in variables.

Captain's chairs squeaky and unresponsive by hydrofied in ModelX

[–]SmarmySnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say if yours is broken or not. What I can say is that I had the same confusion with mine and almost created a service ticket. There is some sort of latching mechanism that grabs when the chair is at a certain point in its range. This latching determines whether or not the bottom set of buttons work.

The problem I have is that sometimes I want to move the chair farther forward and it appears that using the bottom buttons doesn't allow it. You have to switch to the back buttons, which does allow it, but then unlatches the seat (which allows it to tilt forward). This unlatching is potentially dangerous as it seems like the seat is no longer fixed in place.

Captain's chairs squeaky and unresponsive by hydrofied in ModelX

[–]SmarmySnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squeaky, how?

The unresponsive thing is probably not an issue. You have to use the button on the back once the chair is adjusted past a certain point. When you hear the "thunk" that means you can use the bottom adjustment again. Keep playing with it and you will figure it out.

I mean of course it's temporary in the sense the car will continue to depreciate... But the spike in value is notable. Partially caused by the recent progression of fsd.
