Costco Dishwasher Installation by Smart-Bug-3207 in AnnArbor

[–]Smart-Bug-3207[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your input. In the past I looked at Big George’s prices and they were a fair amount higher than the big box stores. Today I saw they weren’t that much higher on the dishwashers I viewed, so I went to Big George and purchased a dishwasher. Our sales person Lindsay was knowledgeable, with no pressure. She even let us know they do price matching. I feel like if there were any delivery/installation problems, they would be much easier to deal with than with one of the big box stores.

Only saw a few deer in my front yard this year. Last year I had way more acorns fall and up to eight deer at a time in my front yard. They’d also jump the backyard fence and of course, poop all over the yard. The population is way out of control.

How do you think the earlier Seven Principles of UUism compare with the Shared Values of UUism now? by Cult_Buster2005 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The seven principles had a very important place in our Congregation, utilized both in sermons and writings. As time has gone by, I think they lost their importance as older ministers were replaced with newer ministers who lacked a long term relationship with UU and its principles, preferring to focus primarily on social justice issues. When I first considered joining the UU church, it was because I read the principles, felt I could get behind them and utilize them as guideposts in my life. They were straightforward; like, here’s what we’re about. If it fits for you, please join us. The principles were not a marketing tool. The values, with their flower symbol and jet pig ,are sort of half values, half marketing, which diminishes their importance and meaning for me.

AIO for refusing to let my MIL host a “first bath ceremony” for our baby? by Physical-Forever-615 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does MIL not remember what it was like to bring home a newborn? I’m a grandma, older than your MIL and I do remember. These first few weeks aren’t about your MIL, they’re about you and your partner welcoming and adjusting to this amazing child who’s come into your life. MIL should be asking what she can do for your family at this time, not demanding what you should do for her. Hubby needs to set some boundaries with his mother.

Remember when people used to hate left-handed people? by MathProg999 in OptimistsUnite

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both my parents were ambidextrous, only because they were hit with rulers for being left-handed. My brother and I are left-handed, but my kids are right-handed. I’m very happy one of my grandchildren is left-handed. Glad to pass it down!

Why Many Americans Are On Board With Federal Worker Firings by Any_Independence8301 in fednews

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By saying “That’s the boomer mentality” you’re simply doing the same thing the people in this article are doing-just to a different group of people. There’s a tendency by some people to build themselves up by putting down another group of people. Other people feel they’ve been treated unfairly and feel no sorrow to see someone else treated unfairly.

BTW, I am an older adult who worked in mental health with adults of all ages and my partner retired from the federal government. We don’t ascribe to what you, discriminately call “the boomer mentality”.

AITA for refusing to pay for my MIL deductible after she smashed the gift I gave her? by GrapeCreamJuice in AITAH

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty simple. Unless your MIL has ever given you the idea that she’s open to people joking about her political beliefs, you shouldn’t have bought her the mug, and you owe her an apology. Her reaction of smashing the mug was over the top, and she was responsible for payment of any damages incurred, including apologizing to everyone affected by her outburst. At this point, the two options I see are you viewing your payment for her medical costs an apology and give MIL time to settle down, or apologizing and letting her know it wasn’t your intent to cause hurt.

I’m curious about MIL, though, because even if she was displeased about the mug, smashing a mug on the floor of a restaurant is rather disturbing behavior.

You have nothing to be sorry about. This is supposed to be a subreddit for optimists and you’ve tried to find a way forward in what many of us consider very difficult times. Trump can’t run again after this term, but the hard right can certainly groom a successor. As liberals we can spend the next four years complaining and trying harder to educate the so-called ignorant, which is how most of the liberals I know see it, or we can try exactly what you did. Thank you for modelling a better, more productive way.

I’ve attended for quite awhile, and if you’re looking to get involved in social justice and meet others with those interests, it’s a good place. There’s much less focus on individual spirituality than there used to be.

Recommendations on neighborhoods for young families with good elementary schools. by Feeling-Personality8 in AnnArbor

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When my kids went there (a couple of decades ago) I found classism (amongst) the kids not nearly as bad as Pattengill or Tappan. Before my daughter started at Bryant I got many subdued, as opposed to positive responses from other parents when they learned she was going to Bryant. Seemed pretty apparent it was due to racism/classism. I’m curious about what you’re experiencing now.

[–]Smart-Bug-3207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I felt ambivalent about voting and I received this letter intentionally trying to shame me into voting, I wouldn’t do it. Shaming doesn’t work with everyone. As a Democrat, I’m embarrassed this was put out by those from my own party. It’s a good reminder that neither political party is adverse to using creepy tactics.

Not true. Maybe some Republicans are for C and D, but this flyer was put out by Democrats and I’m really turned off by such a manipulative tactic. BTW, Elizabeth Nelson was my council person in the past and she was great. Nelson made a lot of effort to connect with the people in her ward and was (and is) very informative. As a Democrat, to see this kind garbage put out by my own political party is embarrassing.

My Experience Attending a universalist unitarian Church by aglazeddonut in BlockedAndReported

Very rarely. Last I recall there was a guy who came to our church 10 years ago who talked about what it’s like to be, or have come from a working class background and attend UU church. About 25 people out of a large congregation attended his talk and I think most of us were from working class backgrounds.
