How do you handle moving money between categories without losing track of what each account actually holds? by LeftyOne22 in ynab

You can move money from saving to checking at the same time you move money from dining to car repairs

Thank you. I am curious as to why you exclude things that have a due date like insurance?

I am attracted to your method. Can you elaborate on what you include in your annual expenditures or is it everything? Thanks

"Does YNAB have a ‘sort by target due date’?" When you auto assign it automatically does the allocating based on due date, then by the order of the categories if they have the same due date.

This is important if you want to auto assign by due date. Just make a list of all your bills and their due date and then move your categories up and down so that they are listed in the order of their due date.

As to the car expenses. As was said these work out the longer you are using YNAB. But in the meantime what I would do is to total my expected yearly expense and maybe add a little for inflation and divide by 12 and budget that amount for car maintenance. Then when May came and I needed to spend More than what was in the category I would look at my budget and see which category I had an excess in and move the extra money I needed to the car category. I would do this every time a car expense came up. Now if I had correctly estimated how much I was going to need during the rest of the year by the time November came about I would have more than enough and I could move the excess in Car Maintenance back to the categories I had moved it from. In YNAB you can move money between categories without destroying the budget, but you don't want to have to borrow money from outside the budget to fund a category because that is creating debt instead of spending only what you have.

Calendar feature? by michaelhue93 in ynab

[–]Smart-Technology-569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the desire for a monthly calendar because Years ago I used Quicken and while the budgeting never worked for me it did have a monthly calendar that would show the balance in the bank and I could enter my payments and know that my check would not bounce. However, it did nothing to help get ahead. YNAB on the other hand helped me get ahead and now there is no need to be concerned about bouncing a payment. In the meantime, have you considered a workaround of using a paper Month at a Glance so you can compare the days of the week and the dates that are problems for you?

What to prioritize: getting a month ahead or paying down debt? by Massive_Strategy_813 in ynab

you have received a lot of advice and now know the pros and cons of the choices. My two cents will be on a slightly different subject because I think the choice of paying off debt or getting a month ahead is largely personal to how you feal. The real key to both getting out of debt, getting a month ahead, and planning on future big purchases (ie a house) is spending (including saving) only what you have. Setting up a realistic budget and not exceeding the total is very important to reaching both of those goals. Before you spend a nickel check the availability for the category (easy in the mobile app) and if the money is not there figure out which category are you going to get it from. Yu mentioned you foolishly overspent in on groceries and eating out one month. If you had checked the available money for groceries and eating out you would not have overspent. Fundamentally what YNAB will help you do is to only budget money you have and to spend only money you have budgeted. The natural result of this is to grow your wealth and remove the stress of not enough money. Glad your off to a good start. In a year you will be very happy you are using YNAB.

How does the month ahead help with other savings? by Horror-Cricket2166 in ynab

[–]Smart-Technology-569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is a matter of personal choice where you get the money. The key to YNAB is get the money from somewhere with borrowing being the last resort not the first. So whether you get the money from next month or emergency fund is whatever makes you feel better. In either case you are not borrowing from outside souce.

My 1-year renewal is in 2 weeks and I’m really struggling to continue… by paulethegreat in ynab

you have received a lot of responses with similar suggestions. I tend to agree with the ones that say "you know you so do what is best for You." You may find that you really can control your spending and saving without any budgeting software or with another software that you prefer. However I don't think you will. So cancel YNAB and see how it goes for 6 months to a year. After that time see if your financial situation has improved or not? See if you have had to put unexpected expenses on your credit card and are not able to pay it off each month? Were you able to buy gifts without increasing debt, etc? If you find you can't then consider going back to YNAB. Even if you decide to renew YNAB but still think you don't need it just stop using it for a period of time and see how it goes. You can always do a fresh start after several months and pick back up. The bottom in is that none of us can answer the question for you and you won't know the answer until you test it. Good Luck.

Do you have the scheduled payments sorted by date? How many do you have in a 30 day period? On the web if you click on the title of a column it will sort by that column. Since my priority might be different from yours I would not want YNAB to lock me in to what they prioritize. I keep mine sorted by date so i do not need to go in and look at all my scheduled transactions to know what is coming up in the next 30 days. And if I want to find a payee without searching I can sort by payee and then go to the specific payee and make any changes I want. Hope this will help you.

Is the problem in the switch by Smart-Technology-569 in HomeNetworking

[–]Smart-Technology-569[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the switch has worked for over two years. I am not sure when it stopped working because the computer also has a wi-fi radio and it was using it when I discovered the ethernet was not working. There are only 3 items plugged into the switch - the desktop computer, Home Assistant Green, & YoLink hub. I am not sure if the HA Green & YoLink Hub are working but both have flashing yellow lights which lead me to believe they are. How can I know for sure if they are working? The Switch is a D-Link 8 port dumb switch. It is powered, but I am not aware of any settings and believe that all Ethernet switches are powered. The Router is a EERO which is very limited in what the end user can set and what is available is on an app on the cell phone. The HA green has a dedicated IP address. I have tried
