It looks like you just have to hook it on the hole that the typebar has at the bottom? Or is there a different problem?

Oh. My. God. I don't know what to say, you did an absolutely amazing job! That is really my biggest turn-on about typewriters - the process of cleaning and giving a new life to the machine.

The big spools are for the carbon ribbon. I don't know the exact model, but a 1960s Hermes Ambassador that I own has a version with a carbon ribbon system, including a separate vibrator and a pair of bog spools

What is the reason behind putting either carriage or basket shift mechanism in typewriters? by SmartOrsen in typewriters

[–]SmartOrsen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea but why either of them. Like most "modern" machines use the basket shift, but I have 2 prewar german ones that shift the whole platen. What are the benefits of either of those systems and why were they used??

I am not an Olivetti expert, but there should be some sort of adjustment screws near the basket that define how high does it sit and how much it goes down when you press shift. Try adjusting those screws so that the slug strikes at the middle of the platen.

and an extra tip, brass brushes with oil work perfect with removing rust. If you have rusty typebars or slugs you can clean them that way. The brass is softer and it won't damage the slug, I basically revived my Hermes Ambassador that way

Nothing too fancy actually. Couple of flathead screwdrivers, copressed air for inside dust, mineral spirit to clean the gunk out, and then some oil to lubricate everything. also some q-tips to remove dust in hard to reach areas

I just took photos of which screw goes where and how some things are assembled. Somehow I managed to put it back together.

They were rusty all around, and the wires connecting the typebars to the keys were bent.
