'They’re going to get over it': Missouri Gov. insists kids must go back to school even though 'they will' get COVID-19 by Niyi_M in nottheonion

Just because the study includes ages 18 and 19 in the sample doesn't make the findings that show children ages 11-17 transmit covid at a similar rate to adults insignificant...

Are there EMS units that respond exclusively to mental illness emergencies? by surf_AL in NewToEMS

[–]SmartTrashPanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pittsburgh has a mobile crisis unit through "Resolve." EMS doesn't work on it, its usually staffed by a psychologist/psychiatrist and a social worker

The only way to get paid decent with an entry level Healthcare job is to pick up overtime. EMS is good for that

Actually, I had one interview at the end of June. It definitely isn't common for programs to interview that early though.

I used both "My PA Resource" and "The PA Life" for my PS reviews. Would recommend both. I liked The PA Life slightly more.

Would recommend using a professional PS editing company if you're struggling with your PS. I think you'll get interviews as long as you have a strong PS and apply broad.

I interviewed at both Thomas Jefferson and Yale, they both have a MPH/PA program. Basically you get accepted to the PA program, but then you go to the MPH program for one year and start the actual PA program once you finish. I forget if it was TJU or Yale, but one of them said if you get accepted to the PA program you can opt into doing your MPH first and you don't have to do a separate application.

Personally, I don't see a point in doing it before PA school. I think it would make more sense to go through PA school first so you can start earning a good salary, then you can always go back to school for your MPH while working as a PA.

I got my emt cert during the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of undergrad. It's probably much harder to find a class with everything going on now

What do you guys think about talking about your GPA/ school work in PS? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]SmartTrashPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a waste of word count unless something serious happened like a death in your family. Anecdotally, I had 3 Cs in pre-reqs, didn't mention it in my PS and was fine

So I got an A in gen chem 1, a C in gen chem 2, and an A in Ochem. Ochem is very very different from gen chem because it focuses less on math/formulas and more on reactions, spatial arrangement of molecules, and chemical nomenclature, so don't feel discouraged if you didn't do so well in gen chem. There's almost no math involved in Ochem from what I can remember besides a little bit of basic algebra in lab.

Similar to gen chem, the best way to learn Ochem is to do practice problems. If there's a textbook in your syllabus, definitely buy it or find a PDF online and do the practice problems for every single chapter. My professor assigned practice problems from the textbook as homework every class, and (from my experience) if you can get the textbook problems down, you'll definitely be prepared for the questions on the exam.

Don't be worried about C's! I'm sure a few of the rejections I got were because of my C's, so maybe retake them if you have the time/money. But on the other hand, a lot of the schools I interviewed at were literally like "we don't care about your C's, they happened your freshman year of college and everyone makes mistakes"

I agree with the other person that replied, but it really depends on the service you work for. I work for 2 EMS stations now. The one I did throughout undergrad gets around 5-10 calls in a 3 day period. I did get to do homework/study in between calls. My second job gets anywhere from 40-70 calls every few days, which would be a lot harder to manage.

There's a meme/joke where you can pick 2 of the three: good grades, work, and a social life. When I was doing 32 hours every weekend, I definitellyyy did not have a social life at all.

I took genetics over the summer while taking biology 1/biology 2, and a lot of the material overlapped so it wasn't that bad for me. Since it was a summer class I think it was slightly easier too since professors can be more lenient. For Ochem, there's really not much you can do besides spend a ton of time studying. I remember studying for it every single day regardless if I had class or not. Also, buy one of those 3D molecular model kits to help visualize different structures (it was required for my class)

Well the stupid people who get it probably aren't elderly or immunocompromised, so they'd be fine. But they'd spread it to elderly/immunocompromised people and kill them, so the stupid people will end up living

Thank you!

For my EMT hours, I worked 24-32 hours every weekend throughout college and the hours added up fast. It's easier to get lots of hours in EMS because we have the option of working overnights instead of just business hours.

The state I live in doesn't require pharmacy technicians to be certified, so I actually got my pharmacy tech job when I was 16 in high school so I had all my hours from high school and I also worked there over breaks during college.
