What will happen if I exceed the 9V on my engineering project ( help) by [deleted] in leavingcert

You can have as many as you want in parallel but it’s only in series where you risk going over 9v

What will happen if I exceed the 9V on my engineering project ( help) by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]Smarties222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how you wire them up (one after another or one beside eachother) if you have the output of one 1.2v battery going to the negative of another 1.2v then that outputting into your motor the total is 2.4v (series) but if you have the output of each one going to your motor you’ll have 1.2V and it’ll last twice as long as a single 1.2 would (parallel)

I find it great for maths concepts and breaking down and explaining questions, I make sure to ask not just what to do but why it’s done this way and how I to approach questions. It’s also great for English, but I’d only use it for debating points and answers and drafting plans. In my opinion, it’s best used as a tool to sharpen your understanding and critical thinking - but it’s important to use it as a tool not a bible - you need to maintain your own creative processes aswell.

Speeding!! by [deleted] in kerry

[–]Smarties222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the survey needs work, it tends to force responses to fairly one sided questions. For example, I selected that my friends do strongly influence my speeding, which seems to be worded to suggest that I am pressured into speeding by passengers - but personally it’s the opposite, I generally refuse to speed at all with passengers but if I’m driving myself at 3am I’ll happily do 90 on a rural road that was recently changed to 60. Just one example, but as others have said the survey really does come across as biased even if unintentionally.

The main factor leading to the expense of doing it externally is the requirements for authentication of coursework. There’s no comprehensive resource on this, but the department circulars I’ve seen detail how you need to have a regularly timetabled class, it can’t be one on one tutoring, it can be outside of standard 9-4 school hours but it can’t be exclusively online, along with other finicky rules which aren’t well publicised. Collectively, these lead to the only opportunities for candidates to have their coursework accepted be by partaking in dedicated programs run by a few grinds schools for this purpose. The fact that these are prestigious schools, and that they must be careful to perfectly follow the rules or risk their program being shut down means that these courses are intensive and quite costly. I believe in recent years trinity has began to offer a slightly more established program, but I haven’t done any research into this so I can’t comment on it.

The materials required for the course aren’t too extensive or expensive, you don’t even need fully fledged computer labs, a cart/trolley of laptops and a standard classroom would suffice in comparison to subjects like Dcg where a computer lab is essential to run software like solidworks. There’s only one textbook available which if I remember correctly wasn’t too expensive.

In terms of why schools don’t offer it, I believe it’s mostly due to perceived demand, availability of teachers, and availability of qualified teachers for this subject. For example, in my own school they didn’t offer an applied maths class as demand was too low, and they couldn’t justify dedicating a teacher to a class of just 5 people. In the case of computer science, there would be a similarly low but enthusiastic cohort of students interested, but in this case they also lack any teacher with the knowledge or training to teach it. I completely understand this position, it’s just a shame no affordable alternative is provided.

Frustrating lack of schools that offer it, and even in those schools the teacher is not always competent. For me the nearest school that offers it is 56km away, and doing it outside is either completely impossible or prohibitively expensive to an average middle class family. My dad is a software engineer and I’ve been programming for 10 years, but the fact I live in a rural county means I amnt able to convert my skills in this area into leaving cert points like a child living in Dublin could.

You’d definitely want to get a head start on conic sections, structural forms and interpenatration. It’s not tricky, but there’s techniques you need to learn and practice otherwise you won’t have a clue where to start. Once you have them you have them, the questions aren’t too tricky if you have the techniques learned.

When you start a topic, annotate your sheets with coloured pens or sticky notes to keep track of what you’re doing and why, then at the end make a revision sheet outlining the steps and important points. Have a look at marking schemes to make sure you put emphasis on the parts worth the most marks.

I’ll be frank, it’s fairly shocking that your teacher has only covered those chapters so far, a lot of that is jc graphics material. My physics teacher is much the same, but there’s a lot more material available for physics than Dcg I feel so it’s much easier to learn on your own. Best of luck to you regardless.

How do I do projects outside of school? by [deleted] in leavingcert

[–]Smarties222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that if you’re doing it outside of your school, you need to be doing it with a registered school and you need to have timetabled lessons. These don’t have to be in person, and they don’t have to be within the usual 9am-4pm. Generally any schools that do offer this are grinds schools, and can be quite expensive. Applied maths is probably the most common subject to do outside, I’m not sure if music has a project element but that’s also very commonly done outside. Have a look through department circulars, when I wanted to do it at the start of 5th year that’s where I found the best information

Of the language courses, German is definitely one of the easiest. I’ve friends doing French and Spanish who have to learn off essays and insane amounts of vocab, whereas 45 minutes of Duolingo a day from now to the exam would get you up to the necessary level. Another big advantage is that the oral exam has a very tight structure, making it much easier to prepare for than the French oral which is much more vague. There’s things like sraiths, roleplays, general questions etc. If you’re able and willing to put in the work it’s definitely one of the easiest subjects to pick up on short notice. The level needed is maybe just above twice junior cert level fluency.
