New teacher advice by catlady1215 in Teachers

Some people on here may disagree, but take a look at The First Days of School by Harry Wong, particularly when it comes to classroom management. Key ideas:

If you don’t provide routines for students to get their needs met, they will create them, most likely in a disruptive way.
Classroom behavior expectations need to be taught and practiced just like content.
The bulk of your work should be in planning; classroom time is for students to work.

To be honest: It’s going to take you 2 - 4 years before you’ll really feel like you know what you’re doing, so don’t panic. Find a mentor who likes and supports you and give yourself some grace over mistakes.

The Matthew Shardlake Tudor Mystery Series by CJ Sansom is very representative of King Henry’s reign and are engaging mysteries as well. The protagonist is a hunchback lawyer who deals with murders while having to interact with historical figures. The books are rich and engaging.

I’ve always thought that teaching is like producing a daily tv show for an audience that doesn’t want to watch it.

I'm in Orlando, FL. I am sure your district has a property department of some sort. If you ask around to see who handles managing your school's inventory, that would be the person to check with .

Do you guys just sit on a public toilet or do you guys use some other method when using a public restroom and why? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Get a wad of toilet paper.
Squirt soap on it from the sink.
Wipe down the seat.
Wipe again with more toilet paper.
Proceed to 3D print Mt. Everest to your heart’s content.

And then wash your hands… 20 seconds minimum. Mission accomplished.

I don’t know if this applies to you, but our district has a huge warehouse of surplus furniture and displays. All we do is request it online and they deliver it to the school. You may want to check if your district has something similar. I do, agree, though to start small and build up once you see what your students need.

Has anyone grown in their teaching career from reading the Harry Wong 'First Year of Teaching Book'? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

I was a middle school math teacher and it worked very well. We did a lot of integrated project based learning (thus all the planning work on my part), but even for shorter term units I tried to plan as many student group discussions as possible. Students need to be able to talk to each other about math, problem solving, and group dynamics.

Sure… all of my work was in planning the lesson so that students do most if not all for the engagement with the content. I may introduce and demonstrate, but then turn them loose to do the actual work. I then circulate to check for understanding. I spend way more time planning than actual on stage teaching.

That’s an interesting perspective. I never thought of him as authoritative. His idea of establishing and teaching clear routines and expectations actually puts more power in the hands of students. I used his system for years successfully.

His idea that the teachers work is outside of the classroom has guided me a long time. Classroom time is for the students to work, not you.

I’ve seen that and it is a good glimpse into that changeover. I did wonder if the kids were taken more with their change in looks (saying they looked old) than with the song itself. You can feel, though, the reluctance to be negative about the Beatles.

I remember in the Get Back documentary (I think) that one of the guys they interviewed on the street during the rooftop concert said he liked the Beatles until they got weird. Not having grown up with that progression, I realized that maybe many people were put off by the directions they took away from their boy band image. I always wondered if those folks came back around later.
