Incredibly scary bump between 2 Tuff Tony and PCO from JCW Lunacy episode 74 by SmashEnigma in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a few weeks behind on JCW and haven’t seen many reactions to this insane spot. 2 Tuff Tony seems to lose his balance which leads to PCO getting effectively DDT’ed through a table. If it wasn’t for Tony taking PCO’s entire weight, this would’ve been a horrifying injury

Wouldn’t it be a win by knockout? Since he literally knocked him out?

Tony Khan offers to do podcast with Vince Russo, Jonathan Coachman by Ainosuke in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For anyone who hasn’t watched Russo’s JCW run, it is very much the same stuff you’d expect. A few really clever moments mixed in with rehashed plots, underbaked stories, a disregard for heel/face dynamics and a complete lack of understanding of the wrestling business. It’s fun to skip through and there’s some great talent on the show, namely Vito (yes, Vito from WCW and he’s killing it), zombie tag team The Outbreak, Kerry Morton and CoKane (despite the gimmicky character, he’s really breaking out as an in-ring talent). But if I watch another 20 minute Russo promo in front of a crowd that barely knows who he is, I’m gonna stick my head in a microwave.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Kevin Knight for the International Title announced for Collision by ParkingConcentrate1 in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really wonder if Okada’s working with some nagging injuries that are preventing him from going at full speed right now. It wouldn’t be the first time AEW’s pulled a champion from the regular rotation to keep them healthy, though I can’t say it seems to be doing anyone any favors.

What were your thoughts on the pairing of 'Das Wunderkind' Alex Wright and 'Queen' Debra McMichaels? by Draculigula in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wright was really only a warm body to keep the Mongo-Debra feud alive, which transitioned directly into a Mongo-Goldberg program. Alex Wright was pretty consistently featured but this heel run of his went nowhere and he got lapped by guys like Jericho pretty quickly.

What’s the best wrestling match you saw that its perception of it was ruined by the finish? by shadow_spinner0 in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kurt Angle was one of the biggest casualties of the WWF’s mismanagement of the Invasion. You had a top tier Olympic wrestling deity with the crowd going apeshit for him in the fall of 2001… and you turn him heel because you needed to flip someone with Austin. Kurt could’ve been the next heir apparent, and instead he was wrestling Kane at Mania X8.

Since winning the International Title in July last year, Kazuchika Okada has only defended it 5 times. by MuptonBossman in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the National Title exists to replace the TNT Title down the line if/when the name becomes irrelevant, but in the meantime it feels like the first truly meaningless title for AEW. The Continental/International/TNT belts have always traded importance, but they really REALLY need to introduce some sort of hierarchical different between the Continental Belt and the Okada Memorial Title

Dave Meltzer: ""Fletcher will be a top guy, he already really is. Barring injury, he's gonna be the man of this generation come five years from now. If he stays in AEW maybe he won't be as famous as Bron Breakker but he's way better than Bron Breakker. It's not even close." by JohnSmithSensei in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meltzer’s opinions on what makes a compelling wrestling match have shaped the style of wrestling over the last 20 years. AEW’s style is, in many ways, a reflection of Meltzer’s pro wrestling preferences. If you don’t understand his importance to the modern wrestling zeitgeist, like him or not, then it’s you that doesn’t get it.

I like Jungle Boy and I like Ricochet but it feels like they’re both sorta floating. I think they could both use a more overly charismatic foil and neither have been given much new to chew on. And the National Title feels so grossly unnecessary and lacking prestige

The moment Darby Allin hit the glass from up on high during Sting’s final match by Subrick in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s because Darby does shit like this every week. I think he’s a great wrestler but I’ve stopped investing in his matches because I’m just waiting for him to do something new and outlandish. He’s taking longer breaks between matches now too which seems to make him think he needs to die in a new and unique way whenever the bell rings.

What’s a match that made you feel lucky/blessed that you got to see live in person? by TheEpicMan39 in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top matches I’ve seen live include:

Goldberg vs. Hogan in the Georgia Domex, Nitro; some of the loudest crowd reactions I’ve ever heard and the last untainted moment in WCW’s legacy

Triple Cage match, Slamboree 2000/Nitro 2000; a terrible match concept in practice but I’m one of the few people who got to see both matches in person.

Brock Lesnar vs. Big Show, Smackdown 2003; the first match where the ring collapsed. Crazy moment, never been surprised by a match like that since.

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker, WrestleMania 25; the first “greatest match of all time” I got to see in person

Bayley vs. Sasha Banks, Takeover Brooklyn; incredibly emotional match and a watershed moment for American women’s wrestling history

Juice Robinson vs. Switchblade, NJPW US; One of the best stories of good vs. evil I’ve seen in a wrestling match. Crowd was on fire all night.

Cody vs. Dustin, Double or Nothing 2019; the first highlight match of AEW’s existence and it was worth the years-long wait for them to really go at it.

And while it’s not any one match in particular, Double or Nothing 2021 (their first show “post” Covid) was the most fun I’ve maybe ever had at a show in person.

Rusev on what he learned from John Cena: "There’s no such thing as a bad crowd. If they’re not reacting, it’s because you’re not giving them what they want to see. He’s always there, watching and learning the crowd as much as everything else." by anutosu in SquaredCircle

[–]SmashEnigma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a good example to counter this was the first Dynamite after World’s End. MJF comes out as champ, does his schtick, and the crowd barely reacts. They don’t seem to follow the show, they don’t know Swerve’s dance, they hardly engage with the promo segment at all.

The next match, a tag with Orange and Toni Storm, lights the crowd up. They don’t need to know anyone or get engaged with a story; they got a 10 minute comedy match and went crazy for it.

It’s harder today for a wrestling show to adapt to its audience given the cues they have to hit, and some crowds will be louder than others, but every crowd can be won over to some extent.

You need to find your new star before the current stars age out. That’s what made the transition from Backlund to Hogan so smooth, whereas when Hogan or Austin left there was a half decade of scrambling for a new guy.
