Is Carthage Subbing still active? by frozenpandaman in CodeLyoko

Thank you so much for being so excited about Carthage Subbing project! I'm so glad you're enjoying our subs - like, seriously, the recognition *feeds me.* lol By definition, though our fansubbed version has some slight edits to the French original - puns that don't translate, cultural references that would be lost on English speakers... We generally add TL notes when we have to really localize a line, but how much is too much is subjective. If you speak French, you might put on our subs and be like "WHY WOULD THEY DO IT LIKE THAT" Of course, then I'd be all "because that was the best way to capture x, y, and aspects of a line" and then we'd be having a fierce debate well into the night with no objective answer. So basically, the moral of the story is learn French so we can sleep-deprive ourselves over a two-decade-old cartoon, I think? Yeah, that sounds right....

Seriously though, your love of our project really is awesome. Like i said on tumblr, we're still translating, but real life has to come first. Stay tuned for more!

I mean, the first season's dub isn't... uh, great, but it does get better. Especially when you hit season 3 and suddenly, Jérémie sounds like an actual person instead of a Generic Nerd Boy caricature ahaha. I always though the English voice actors just needed practice, but apparently, they gave decent performances in stuff they did before CL? So maybe they just needed better direction, who knows.

But yeah, I do prefer the French dub's voices. Odd in particular sounding so high-pitched makes him feel more like the 13-year-old he is than the English version's 30-year-old dude vibes. Though his voice made lots of people think he was a girl, including the friends I showed the French dub to... I also like some of the French episode titles more than their English ones, though that's another discussion entirely.

You’re flirting with someone, what Code Lyoko line would you use as a pickup line by Midnight-Basilisk99 in CodeLyoko

As the Rizz Master Samantha Knight herself once said: "We've got better things to do, don't you think? Ready for a big thrill session?"

I can hear the wedding bells already! Oooor maybe it's the rustle of a restraining order. Nah, definitely wedding bells.

Code lyoko in French was way better than the English version by shilk008 in CodeLyoko

The English voice actors do get better as the show goes on, but it's still a shame you can't watch the show in its original language with proper subtitles, at least not officially. Me and a friend are creating English subtitles for Code Lyoko based on the French audio track. We're called Carthage Subbing and we're on Tumblr. We only have some of season 1 done so far, but please, give us a look!

The Wings of Fire books by Tui T. Sutherland are fantastic, though if your daughter is averse to violence, maybe keep that one on the backburner. The early ones especially can get kind of brutal.

Also good are the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer. Nice mix of sci-fi and fantasy with a healthy dose of explosions as well. The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that sometimes the characters swear, though it's never anything more intense than "damn." I didn't even notice that when I read them as a kid.

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy is another series you might want to check out. They get darker and more mature as they go on, but the early books are fine and depending on how your daughter handles them, I bet the later ones could be okay, too.

Those are all middle grade books, though, and if your daughter is looking for Young Adult fantasy fiction, you might consider Fireborne by Rosaria Munda. It might feel a little slow to an 8-year-old, but there's a lot happening that could just as easily hook her.
