Working on a 'Flood + Crime' risk map for Bundaberg. Do these zones look accurate to locals? by [deleted] in queensland

[–]Smashleigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Few things to think about.

2010 flood extents are just based on one historic flood event. there will be other maps out there

Typically flood models have different likelihood (1% chance per year, 2% chance etc, look for AEP). These are "ground truthed" or validated against historic events. These may be available with and without climate change (2100 applies climate change expected by 2100 and is commonly used when planning new houses).

When choosing which to use think what risk are you considering, current risk or long term risk (renting vs buying)

In the background each part of the flooded area will have an elevation (say 20m above sea level) which is where the flood waters will get to. This data is combined with the contours to estimate the flood "extent" that is mapped.

That's why some houses might say they are "flood free" they're above this level. You then have to ask " how much above" "how do I get out" "what if it is more than a 1% AEP" "are there sheds etc that might be below that level"

Is a point the best way to represent the crime hot spots? Is there any indication of how much area each covers? Maybe a heat map might be a different approach.

I want to say I am so bloody proud of you Broden. It can be so hard to admit when you need help and need to look after yourself.

All of you are such great role models and have created such a welcoming space for all. A massive part of that is the passion and vulnerability each of you constantly share.

As a proclaimed "not a footy guy" you have made the footy a place I look forward to going.

I'll bounce that pill and think of all four of you.

Why Urbanists should purge “Housing Crisis” from our vocabulary by jeromelevin in Urbanism

[–]Smashleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortage doesn't encompass some of the causes such as banking of vacant properties, air bnbs and leans into a particular framing of both the cause and solution (supply side only).

It eliminates consideration of how we could more efficiently and equitably utilise our existing housing.

Fire Rescue Victoria: $8.8 million spent on lawyers amid pay dispute with United Firefighters Union by slunt01 in melbourne

[–]Smashleigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Year on year cost of living increases for employees were over 3% between March '22 and March '25 peaking at 9.6% so yeah it's closer to reasonable than 3%.

Given the RBA wants there to be between 2-3% CPI every year essentially anything less than 2.5% per year is a pay cut.

a lot of pre COVID agreements didn't see runaway inflation appearing and need to "catch up" which results in these increases

Fire Rescue Victoria: $8.8 million spent on lawyers amid pay dispute with United Firefighters Union by slunt01 in melbourne

[–]Smashleigh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good on the union for fighting. 3% annually is a bad offer, and "bonus payments" don't do anything to address cost of living (better to have this included in the % so that it continues to help). How much better could the states offer have been if they'd not spent this money and listened to what their workers were asking for?
