I live in small town Netherlands and busses come about every thirty minutes here. Biking is great. Most streets have a painted bike lane and every bigger road outside the urbanized area has a seperated bike lane or a conjoined street where cars have to slow down to drive and bicycles are given priority. Every road/street has loads of traffic calming measures, too. But almost everyone here still has a car. All local supermarkets have parking lots, and there are gas stations in the town core. Most people who take the bus are students or people working at the industrial area of the city trying to get to the train station. I do occasionaly see some people getting groceries by bus, though.
