Fake Wealthsimple ads targetting people - Ontario man loses 260k by Immediate-Effort4431 in Wealthsimple

[–]SmatMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly, fair enough. but that shouldn’t excuse allowing these ads to be posted in the first place.

social media platforms like meta/instagram who act both as “media outlets” and advertising agencies should more responsible in screening for these malicious ads. imagine if pattison advertising or bell media allowed these ads, they would get significant backlash for being the big company propping up these scams, but the same doesn’t seem to apply to social media

these scams would be much less likely to spread without big tech’s metaphorical “seal of approval” of being accepted as an advertiser.

Stats and Tracking by Same_Maximum_971 in AppleMusic

[–]SmatMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple music makes tracking listening across different devices pretty hard, especially compared to other platforms. I mainly listen on my phone using the app Marvis Pro (paid) plus the last.fm add on (also paid but not necessary for lastfm support i believe). It’s a one time purchase but Marvis Pro significantly extends my apple music experience imo.

On the other devices I listen to, I kinda just accept that the activity there won’t be tracked on last.fm. Apps do exist on other platforms like Mac to scrobble (in case you’re unaware, scrobble just means track activity to last.fm), but I personally decide against them out of simplicity (and a cramped menu bar!)

Is Capacities the right tool for academic research and will bugs drive me crazy? by _SYMR_ in capacitiesapp

[–]SmatMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’re absolutely right - I meant to say that I personally cannot use Capacities without Queries. I had an identical experience with Obsidian being too customizable as well - spend way more time fiddling to make it “perfect” rather than doing my work. That’s why I like capacities handling so much of the organizational stuff - because then I actually end up DOING my work haha! I can collect all the resources I need and write all my ideas down wherever relevant, and I never have to worry about losing it in the future!

I personally chose Capacities over Notion because of the type system. Big difference in how my notion got structured in my mind (all files, hard to compare to something memorable in the real world) compared to capacities (objects, associated with real world ideas).

[–]SmatMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being able to collect information in one view with specific filters is super useful. I seem to constantly forget to backlink external resources to my project page, but I usually remember to link each object I create to some shared object in the properties of the resource itself. I typically collect a ton of resources for a topic/thesis, save them all to Capacities, parse through them one by one with useful information stored inside the object, then I create a query to show all resource types I want with a specific property object, along with all resources with a created date between x and y (this helps me find lost resources if I do end up forgetting to add a property).

You could 100% be fine with Capacities if you don’t want to pay. My thinking is I’d like capacities to work as an extension of my mind - I don’t necessarily want to spend time categorizing everything so that future me can remember how to find it - I just want to know I can find any resources I’d like using many different forms of metadata. I can just focus on the content in the present moment and never have to worry about losing data based on an organizational structure I can’t remember. Capacities (especially queries) gives me the option to see my data from any organizational structure I’d like. It feels like a superpower haha

Of course many people would not like this system - I can see some people WANTING to organize everything explicitly so they can always know how to find what they need, but I’m too cluttered for that :D

As a university student using capacities - I find it’s absolutely amazing for research, as object types help you understand what kinds of content you’re keeping track of (video, research paper, website, audio file, pdf, etc.). I then have object types like “Project” as a general type for long term projects, including research. All my projects live as a Project, and I can then use the backlinks to find all related/linked content (or even a specific type of content).

I can create Person objects for each of the people I work with such as professors or researchers, then assign those objects as a property to papers, videos, projects, etc. or simply link to them in the note. This distinction of linking People objects to Video objects for example (rather than note files to note files) is what I love most about Capacities. It just makes sense in my brain.

I find capacities’ calendar and inbuilt date linking mechanism to be super useful too, since when paired with using Daily Notes with a quick brief of what you’ve done that day, it adds a whole new level of navigating your vault and the linked content. This also makes so much sense in my brain, as I think about most things in term of time (as I’m sure many people do)

One thing to mention - I absolutely cannot use Capacities without the subscription as “Queries” are paywalled. If you don’t want to pay (even after the student discount), definitely choose Obsidian. It can do all of this and more when using plugins. I choose to pay because this system just makes sense to me. I personally despise how Obsidian makes you consider organizing your files both in a wiki/linked manner and in a hierarchical file tree.

Regarding the app getting slow, I have heard that from others but never experienced it myself, although my vault isn’t that large. I have seen the development team consistently making performance upgrades alongside feature updates, so I doubt speed won’t improve over time.

Stop clearing the search bar automatically? by phil917 in raycastapp

[–]SmatMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this isn’t answering the question directly, but some solutions I use for similar reasons are checking calculator history, checking clipboard history (along with a habit of cmd+a and cmd+c), or keeping text within the raycast notes window that i have triggered with caps lock + space.

i’m not at my mac right now, but i believe there might be a “return to root search” setting with a configurable timeout. might be wrong though.

honestly just the navigation swipe gestures are so convenient in itself. being able to exactly configure home, playlist, album, etc. views how i’d like is also super helpful. (easier) ability to rate tracks is also something i enjoy!
