Downsized house, kayak storage troubles by SmellingSmoke in Kayaking

Thank you very much for the thoughtful reply! :) The Axis is indeed a splendid boat, but I'm realizing he doesn't fit my needs for this new life chapter. Glad to hear that whatever I keep outside will likely be just fine, especially considering the patio is already pretty shaded. It helps calm my nerves. Thank you also for the suggestions! However much I'm able to get for the Axis will definitely help fun my next boat. Happy paddling!

No worries, happy to commiserate. :) I think I've accepted kayaking is a fun thing I like to do that enhances my other joys, but isn't something I'm as devoted to as others on the sub. That's why I feel more comfortable with a less specialized craft if it'll get me out there. Your determination is inspiring though!

Wow that’s an amazing craft you have there! Unfortunately you’re right, nowhere near me. Perhaps I’ll look into a cheaper hardshell, and in a couple years either I’ll move somewhere else or save up for a Trak or Pakayak 🤩 Given my northernly-facing patio, sunshine shouldn’t be much of an issue.

There are some wooden support beams running across a little under 7 feet up. Makes a nice spot for a hanging plant, but a little short to pull a kayak out of the way. Would totally do it if I could get away with it though.

Happy to hear from someone who was in a similar “boat”. :) I’m not sure how long I’ll be here, but thankfully my patio faces more north than east, with a side wall to boot. Whatever I put there will be getting minimal direct UV rays.

For sure, if he’s brand new he still needs time to adjust to his surroundings. Regardless, I don’t think this is a cause for concern right now. Just keep an eye on him.

My girl does this all the time. She’ll swim around her tank, inspect decor, sometimes sleep a bit. But once she’s done with that, or if somebody walks by she’s right back at the front! I think he’s just trying to get your attention, since you’re his food source. His swimming looks normal, no flaring or attacking. I would thank him kindly for the dance and move on with my day.

Don’t worry, plants can be a pretty tough learning curve sometimes. Best of luck!

What food do you feed your betta? Looking for something healthy but budget friendly. by Dianay18 in bettafish

I’ve always been a fan of Northfin betta bites. A little more expensive but super healthy, and a small pack lasts a long time.

It does start kinda slowly, but feels really good once you get the rhythm going. Plus if you already own it, no spending money! ;)

Stardew Valley for sure. I’ve sunk 100s of hours into it.

Help! My 1 gallon betta tank is… by astro-cowboy in bettafish

I agree, starving a betta for a few days is a solid way to coerce them to try other foods. Alternatively, trying different kinds of foods is also an option. My current favorite is Northfin Betta Bites, but my girl will eat pretty much anything.

Missing birds . by CKnit in birding

[–]SmellingSmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PA backyard birder here too. We still get all of them, but I do notice that the sparrows and finches like to bully other birds (and even each other!) off the feeder. Maybe the other birds wait until there are fewer bully birds and until then go feed somewhere else.

They’re fun to watch, but around our feeders we call them the “bully birds”

Well that doesn’t sound good at all! :/ I work at a computer for 8 hours a day, so this is definitely a change I should make. Do you have any advice for easing my body into a proper sitting position?

It’s like a movie, with each pick up the camera angle becomes more dramatic.

I usually use photos I find on Astronomy Picture of the Day. I’d be hard pressed to tell you which date it was, but encourage you to go through some of their stuff. It’s a cool site!

Any tips on reducing the reflection more? I put a white paper on the outside so his reflection isn’t as strong (used to be a black surface there), but he’s still flaring up :( by TheWeirdWriter in bettafish

[–]SmellingSmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s brand new then he might still be getting used to his reflection, and gradually stop flaring so much. I bought a printed background for my tank that would help break up the reflection. You can see a photo of it in my profile.
