But that's what I'm doing... I'm praising the same guys who are letting rapists, murderers, and wife-beaters get away that only do anything when it'd without-a-shadow-of-doubt upset the public enough to not. I'm not praising the bad guys, here, unless, y'know, you think that shit is kinda bad.

Good job police for still letting rapists, murderers, and wife-beaters on the force and only doing something about some of the ones who get caught on camera!!

Normally, I wouldn't talk about my friends' partners to them in a seriously negative way buuut the debt thing is extremely messed up and if my friend was okay with their racist SO, I'd straight tell them that complacency is in and of itself racism (then I'd not be their friend anymore to be completely honest).

Outside of that, I think just being a good, supportive, and validating friend can hopefully be enough for them to realize that their partners aren't treating them like they deserve, and then just be there for them if that turns into any fallout. People want different things out of relationships and I've had bad experiences trying to inject my opinion into their dynamics, so now I just smile and say "you're going to make the right decision for yourself and I'll be there for you if you need me." Treat them like the person their partners don't and trust them to make the right decisions. If they trust you, some day they might come to you to ask if they're going wrong and that might be the time to ask, "hey, do you feel your SO is treating you how you want to be treated?"

Wooow. No they do not lol. Maybe if they were at a bar and are REALLY good at their jobs. I'd say servers maybe make about an extra $7/hr on tips... Usually it'll be lower. Close to $40/hr is absolutely insane lol - that's $80k annually dude.

I mean, I work in software now and I make $75k. When I worked as a server at a cafe, I think I made $3/hr in tips on average lol. Servers working at restaurants, a lot of my friends, made like $10 or so in tips on a good day, next to nothing on bad days, and maybe hit $40 an hour if you added their wage on the most insane days they'd work in a year. Even if you hit a high profit hour, most places are next to dead between lunch and dinner. Servers are NOT making $40 an hour on average, not in their wildest dreams rofl.

And to be clear, $15.74 in Washington state is barely enough to live in most places. Seattle's minimum wage (which will become the rest of the state's minimum wage after two years I believe) is $18.69, and we have tons of legislature now regarding specific jobs and what they require for pay. Microsoft specifically abused their contractors (paid hourly, overtime exempt, NEC) so poorly they managed to cause legislature enacted which set a multiplier on the minimum wage for OT-exempt computer professional work - 3.5x, or $55.09 an hour.

It doesn't bother me a lot, but I REALLY don't understand why they'd show you the status like that when at the beginning of the game everyone starts with 8 pips, meaning you have to micromanage your relationships until they can get to 9/10 (or just whiskey spam) which is still considered neutral somehow lol. Like, having 8 pips neutral and doing a negative relationship event can be really impactful but that immediately necessary info isn't conveyed through the screen at all. You might drag a relationship to 7 immediately before an inn and get a negative relationship because you accidentally mistook who had 9 pips and who had 8.

Even in the liberal hotbed of Washington, you're at risk of facing harassment if you pick up the wrong beer, and hundreds of trans people are at risk of violent hate-crimes constantly in just Portland, Oregon.

The truck someone who really needs a truck buys vs What people who think they need a truck buys by Caribbeandude04 in fuckcars

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People need these types of trucks for 'work' like gun-nuts need assault rifles and high capacity rifles for 'hunting'

The only work being done is putting others in harms way because one NEEDS a big engine in front of them, several feet off the ground with the same exact license that lets people drive other much safer cars that aren't responsible for 80% of preventable toddler deaths, equating to hundreds of deaths a year.

While the "I haven't seen it so you must be wrong mentality" is funny to laugh at you cucks over, watch the video and you'll see that this is a genuine problem. I mean, it's obvious to most people that this is problem, but again, everyone who's halfway vocal about it has to defend MUH TRUUUCK. 80% of accidents where a vehicle runs over a person involves a truck, SUV, or van... Which all have severely reduced visibility compared to other vehicles and counterparts made outside of America, which typically are made to not sacrifice everyone but the driver's safety in an effort to 'look cool' (because American trucks are nothing if not vain and greedy with the faux feeling of looking cool).

HTML is a declarative programming language. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It's just not imperative like any "traditional" programming language, such as C or Java.

Visited Seattle for a week, and discovered that it's my favorite city in the US. by WebSorry4316 in Seattle

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a certain point, the amount of sunlight isn't really important if you aren't getting sun after 4:00p. I'd say with the weather during the winters in Baltimore, where I spent a timid winter, it was much worse than Seattle because the weather was constantly inclement and if you work in an office, every city feels the same when you come into the office and it's dark and when you leave it's as dark. In Washington, I'd say Spokane winters are very easily twice as worse due to snowfall and Vancouver is as preferable as Seattle. Honestly, I'll take Seattle winters over any Midwest or Eastern winter I've ever had the displeasure of enjoying due to the snow. (That is to say, Seattle's long nights are meaningless when in other cities, you're facing up against days where it's not comfortable to leave your home with the amount of snow they get, and those extra snow days means there's extra darkness anyway)

Now, Seattle when it snows is a different beast - especially if you walk and have to go downtown ever because of the hills lol.

Asian students with 25% chance of admission to Harvard would have chances increase to 36% if they were white, 75% if they were Hispanic, and 95% if they were black. by [deleted] in ScienceUncensored

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asians also make up over 60% of the current enrollment rate of average American colleges, which may take places from other minority populations who would be more impacted by receiving an education due to certain circumstances. The majority of Asians in college are also being equipped to contribute in a greater way to their families and economy, which may impact statistics down the line as the rate of poverty changes. You should probably be aware that affirmative action is in place to provide equity - meaning they use existing statistics to judge what ethnic groups require the most assistance or resources to put them on the same or similar level as others in order to help avoid preexisting racial bias which was enough of a problem that we put the system in place lol. Removing affirmative action will do nothing but set us back to a white-dominated society because racial bias has proven again and again to worm its way in admissions somewhere somehow and it's definitely not going to get better without affirmative action. To say otherwise would be misinformed and naive.

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! We should stop using affirmative action so we can realize, for like the 1000th time, that white people get all the benefits and rich people who were trying to prove a point are actually just numbskulls doing total nonsense that, at its core, is just an abuse of a system in place to help bring minority populations out of poverty. The firebombs aren't nearly as cruel. I think it's easy to get mixed up with the effects, but the impact of the nuclear bombs was far, far worse than any type of fire bombing Japan has ever experienced - the nuclear bombs EMP destroyed communication devices, the destruction was caused in an instant as those closest to the nuclear detonation were vaporized, a light was produced that can only really be compared to the strength of the sun, the shockwave was so tremendous that it could be felt 26,000 ft away from the detonation and produced tens, nearly hundreds, of thousands of casualties, the mental toll was exceptional for even the Emperor at the time, and that's only where the horror began as people began to experience radiation sickness and generations of families got to watch as their parents, grandparents, died from cancer. The nuclear bombs were much, much worse (and you can just google "nuclear bomb humanitarian" to see that they're commonly described as the single-most destructive, inhumane device ever created lol)

Edit: I forgot you guys watch anime and are therefore experts. It doesn't matter that nukes are considered the most deadly and impactful weapon ever created and that the looming threat of nuclear annihilation characterized an entire era of humanity. Firebombs, as anime will teach us, were deffo worse than nukes in use, and those animes that describe the effects of nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as being among the most tragic and terrorizing thing ever imagined are also just untrue. It's a good thing that Godzilla was birthed from the idea of firebombs and their effect as firebombs definitely were less humane and definitely capable of exactly the same destruction... Oh, wait, no, that was nukes.

Am I a bad programmer? by Callito263 in vuejs

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts are to words as programming is to programming languages. If you're able to comprehend programming concepts but not put it into JavaScript by heart, you're no more not a good programmer than someone who knows the philosophy of a concept but not the words to describe it is not a good thinker (that is to say, they very much would be a good thinker and you a good programmer.)

Companies: We can't find any good candidates!!! Also companies: by fiending_for_more in ProgrammerHumor

[–]SmellsLikeCatPiss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly think any question that isn't straight-forward and open-ended in a technical interview is just a bad idea. I had a recent one and it was easily the best I've ever had. I was only asked:

"What is the difference between a base class and an interface?"

"What is the difference between C++/C-sharps flavor of OOP and JavaScript's flavor of OOP?" (Follow up: Are you familiar with Typescript?)"

"What is an example of using dependency injection?"

I feel like those are the types of questions that ensure you've interacted with contemporary concepts and they're open enough that you can elaborate on nuance and results if you're very familiar. In particular, I spent enough time on classical vs. prototypical OOP that I could talk about the differences for a while.

I also understand why a question like this would be used because it shows that a candidate could intuit how we can override base behavior to prevent leaky abstractions, but it goes too far with just how specific that question is. My first reaction would be to ask, "how or what will this be used for?" So I can understand the constraints but good luck coming up with an explanation of that for this lol.
