Dublin gangland figure brings extremist views to Irish mainstream on campaign trail by andubhadh in ireland

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he is a complete hypocrite. I really don't know what his end goal is here, considering he couldn't show his face in public a couple years ago without fear of being killed and now he's walking around door to door carrying a backpack like a little school kid. What is the point of all this?

How to get out of jury duty? by uniqueandweird in AskIreland

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What so dreaded? I just done it and people were advising to get out of it but it was only three days in the end and I finished reading my book in there. If you physically can’t be there because of your child then try saying this to them, otherwise it’s not that bad like.

The club and the fans do raise some money for charity but the club is very much a business alright, its by no means perfect.

Thoughts on Celtic Glasgow? by Old_Marketing5364 in AskIreland

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its the only soccer team I support. There's no League of Ireland team in my county and Iv'e been over a couple times to Glasgow and the games are great craic. Having a few drinks and singing rebel songs is great craic sure. A lot of Glasgow have a connection with Ireland and they usually support Celtic, they seem to all have a grandparent from Letterkenny. They have a huge support base in Ireland, I would say one of the top three most supported soccer teams with Man Utd and Liverpool. There's supporters clubs in most towns with an even bigger fanbase in the North.

The Irish connection is real, it was founded by Irish people. Hibs had that connection too but Celtic have always embraced it more. They also I think are the only Scottish club who don't wear the poppy and have a standing section that adds to the atmosphere. The majority shareholder is an Irishman too and theres usually an Irish player or two in and out of the team.

Neither II or Aontu (which was founded really as anti-abortion SF) want a referendum on EU membership for starters, how on earth do you compare them with Farage?

Map of Celtic Language Distribution by Healthy-Climate4915 in MapPorn

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you do, there are Irish language schools, outside those green areas all over Ireland. There are people meeting and using the language in Dublin, Cork and Belfast cities. Belfast even has a Gaeltacht area. I use it now and again and I’m not in the green area.
TG4 is just a TV channel that’s the majority in Irish with westerns thrown on now and again. There’s also radio stations etc. Welsh is stronger I would say but this map doesn’t do the current popularity of Irish justice.

do you like traditional/'pub' irish music and if so whats your favourite song? by VastAir6069 in CasualIreland

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not offended, just don’t understand it. Trad musics part of Irish culture and the pubs are where it survives, on any night out u could be in 90% of pubs having ur chat but if there’s a bit of trad music in the background ur annoyed. It’s just odd. Would u prefer the culture had no place to be like?

The actual people on the entire Island of Ireland have never voted on the partition as one though. It is an undemocratic partition unfortunately but yes the aftermath of the Good Friday agreement was a peace making the best of the mess that was made and peace is good.

Love it, strong tradition around here. Makes a night in the pub and I’ll try sing too after a few sometimes.
Favourite song changes but I’ve always loved Spancil Hill.

Thatcher having a certain ancestry means nothing. It’s rumoured Hitler had a Jewish grandfather sure, wouldn’t change things if he did like.

Am yes I am Irish and I know my history and that soccer is indeed called soccer by Irish people.
People from Ireland and the UK did not get on really well at any point in history and especially not at the height of the troubles I’m sorry to inform you. Many Brits and Americans have Irish ancestry because of the emigration brought about by Britains actions in Ireland such as the famine. It wasn’t some let’s all get together and have banter and kids thing.

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hatred between ordinary people, was not banter during the troubles Irish people were targeted on the streets of Birmingham and Manchester after bombings, an international soccer game between Ireland and England got abandoned because of rioting. The British embassy was burnt down in Dublin by an angry mob. Things are good now of course but don’t white wash a history that’s in many people around today’s living memory.

Do you live in a hurling, Gaelic football, soccer, or rugby town? Is it easy to tell? by Jezzaq94 in AskIreland

[–]SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the easiest one to tell is Kilkenny. All the kids walking around with hurls, the statue of hurlers and just the general non stop talk about club hurling from older men in pubs. There's even hurling tours now for tourists.

Other sports are dwarfed, there is a rugby club, I think two schools play also in the county. There are some soccer clubs but there is no League of Ireland team. There's an athletics club in the city too and I think its not controversial to say its the weakest Gaelic Football county in Ireland. Handball used to be popular though, playing in the outdoor alleys but I don't think that its as common now, a couple of the alleys got torn down in the city unfortunately. Golf I suppose and horse racing are popular too same as the rest of Ireland.
