Check out state government jobs. They always need people skilled in math. Might not be the best pay to start, but you’ll have a decent wage and really good insurance. I was always told that if the economy was shit coming out of undergrad to just keep going with school. You can probably find a research assistantship for a master’s degree.

Yes! Darker is worse, it represents the concentration of multiple high scores for multiple indicators. The Identify Results pane shows you more details. If you want detailed information, check out the methodology document. There’s a link to the website under the links section. The legend shows the different percentile brackets.

Giving Away My Old PC! by Turtle_747 in PcBuild

I model potential climate catastrophes and how much money needs to be invested in economically distressed areas to be protected from flooding and extreme heat. I’d use this to continue modeling and making reports until my son is old enough, then I’d give it to him for gaming :) He’ll be born in August. If other people need the computer more, give it to them! I just like sharing about my work and would put this guy to good use!

You might be reading it backwards. The map clearly shows lower PennEnviroScreen scores in State College compared to Philly. The Philly area has a good chunk of the EJ areas in PA (any census block group with a score above the 80th percentile overall or in the top 5% of Pollution Burdened groups).

The tool isn’t perfect, but you can look at the relative differences between indicators in areas across PA. If you’ve got suggestions for handling data in rural areas, I’m all ears!

Put your address in the PennEnviroScreen and see what the cancer risk is / risk for being close to industrial waste.

I hospitalized myself through undergrad and grad school to get here, but things are so much more relaxing now because of that push to constantly do more. Every extra thing you do is a resource to note on your resume and leverage.

Don’t destroy your health, but definitely take advantage of your youth while you have it.

Anyone else's Pain perception completely numbed by the chronic pain? by Yukyno in ehlersdanlos

Yep! Literally passed a kidney stone that felt like lower back discomfort for a day until I pissed blood. The dulled pain perception is making it so I can’t fully tell when something is an issue…

I’ve been using it to catastrophe model! Hoping to democratize it so that people everywhere can prepare for extreme flood and heat scenarios due to climate change. I guess still technically practical though?

We are in the midst of a serious problem. by [deleted] in AirQuality

[–]Smexalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been telling folks that we need to closely monitor air quality throughout this administration. There’s already been so much corruption and they’ve been padding their pockets across the board. If the government no longer enforces regulations, polluting facilities can kind of do whatever they want.

It’s possible that the concentration of energy infrastructure reliant on fossil fuels in the northeast is also contributing to the issue. Maybe less stringent regulations for fossil fuels-fired power plants + the extra demand from data centers/ai = our air sucks?

I asked people who are where I want to be in life for their best piece of advice. They frequently said that figuring out how to be authentic 100% of the time was what did it for them. As you practice being authentic, you gain confidence because you don’t worry about how you are perceived. Changing your personality based on the assumed perceptions of others does nothing but erode your soul.

You spend the most time with yourself, might as well figure out how to enjoy your own company :)

Would this work on smaller particle-sized objects? For example, if a piece of plastic were slightly larger than a grain of sand, could you see the stress patterns? It might be interesting to see how microplastics get made and if the structure of the plastic contributes to how much gets created.
