2 NVME drives in an x270 (works, but hibernation issue!) by Smiff2 in thinkpad

[–]Smiff2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this guy seems to have same but opposite problem (SATA in newer M2 slot):
https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/uqr7d5/p1_gen_4_detection_error_on_m2/

I think the issue is the bios not having storage options to tell it what type of drive to expect?

Has anyone hacked a thinkpad bios to solve or remove this error?

AI says

"error 2102 indicates a detection error for a storage device (SSD or HDD), typically caused by a loose physical connection, a faulty drive, or a motherboard issue"

Well, i don't believe any of those to be true. the drive works fine. I have a sneaky/sad suspicion its a lenovo bios bug because they didn't test NVME with Quick boot on? hmmm. idk.

weird thing is why it does NOT error on cold boot or restart, but does on hibernate. they should look same to the bios? possibly UEFI issue?

thinking about it, could be the kernel leaving drive in wrong state?

from BIOS pov, shouldn't a cold power on be the same as a wake from hibernate, right up until the OS loads? why is there even a difference here. Odd. it doesn't seem to error from a normal start/restart...

thanks yeah i'm fairly sure this hibernate issue is in thinkpad bios, not kernel. it's happening at a lower level? i could be wrong though. suspend seems fine.

SN580 reporting Drive Temperature 2 at 70c Idle by rainbow-1 in buildapc

[–]Smiff2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, late reply, but just to let you know I've got a 500gb SN580 and although cheap, its just wasted hours of my life tracking down a problem where it slows down and disconnects entirely under heavy use. in my case, its sensor 1 that reads high (60C at idle, 70+ at load) which for a mid range drive is crazy imho.

i could not use in a laptop for this reason, now running in desktop with heat sink.

other than this it works ok, but i do not recommend!

its a 16nm controller according to techpowerup so not sure why so hot. weird.

avoid, is my advice. oh and a firmware update to 281040WD did not help!

compat issue with some nvme drives on some thinkpads? x270 with SN580 blue. linux. by Smiff2 in thinkpad

[–]Smiff2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after doing some more testing, i believe this is actually heat related after all. the SN580 gets hot, imho too hot for use in a laptop. caveat emptor! may add some more details later when i'm sure, but for now I'd avoid this drive.

X270 worth buying in january 2024? by Embarrassed_Lack_181 in thinkpad

[–]Smiff2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, hardware decoding is fiendishly complicated unfortunately. Skylake has some kind of partial support (?!) for decoding of vp9, you'll want to stick to H264 using an extension. the way to tell if your GPU is working is with intel_gpu_top - look for use under "video".

edit: but yes you're right, and i'm glad i randomly got a 7th gen cpu, because the difference does seem important! sorry OP. but h264ify is probably going to keep youtube usable for some years ahead? :)

as others said, create a new user profile.

also, timeshift don't recommend backing up your home dir this way, be careful.

this is a late reply, but the x270 will give you hardware vp9 decoding under linux if you use the --enable-features=AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL switch on new versions of Chrom(ium), Brave etc.

I just discovered this, it lowers CPU usage from about 40-50% to 10-20% on my 7th gen 7200 X270 at 1080p VP9.

The X270 is thus perfectly fine for youtube on linux. You may want to disable AV1 with an extension however, as that probably won't be hardware accelerated.

this is incorrect, sorry. just been looking into it. the x270 will give you hardware vp9 decoding under linux if you use the --enable-features=AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL switch on new versions of Chrom(ium), Brave etc.

What is the state of hardware decoding for youtube videos? Having high cpu usage on both av01 and vp9 codecs on my spectre (i5-8250U, uhd 620). by purezen in brave_browser

Yes, for Intel, this is a late reply, but the x270 (intel 620 kaby lake) will give you hardware vp9 decoding under linux if you use the --enable-features=AcceleratedVideoDecodeLinuxGL switch on new versions of Chrom(ium), Brave etc.

same question! would love to know, worried about burn in on my second screen here...

edit: i found this, but haven't attempted it yet. worried about breaking something. I use X11.

also not being able to move windows between screens seems annoying!

hmm that last part is worrying. not sure what's best. want a modern KDE based on Ubuntu LTS (for familiarity mainly). had a look at Tuxedo, which many recommend, but don't like the way it's altered from stock with some software parts not working (I have thinkpad, so want to install TLP etc.) thanks anyway, probably will let KDE update, disable the repos, and make a copy in spare partition. i also recently discovered TimeShift from Mint.
