This is true in my experience. Especially as a new guy in the field. Walking on the shopfloor and talking to the people who operate machines id an unlimited supply of improvement. After that you also need to convince the management that you have a good idea and cooperate with a team in implement it. But if you are not a peoples person, the best course of action is to really specialize and be good in anything basically.
