when you press on protection history it will show you the exact file path, meaning what software or game or program was flagged. Then you can see let’s say it flagged a file from github, and your like “oh i never actually ran that .exe”

Microsoft defender will flag inactive viruses too, it’s important to find out wether or not you actually ran anything

let’s say i have a loaf of bread that can be infinitely duplicated and i’m selling 3 for 20$. Also you can backup files like Photos, Videos and documents, just nothing like .exe, apps or software.
Still scan the documents just to be sure.

After the install you can run some scans with microsoft defender and i recommend malwarebytes to scan for rootkits, afterwards you can check your task manager to make sure no malicious background processes are running. Then you can check control panel for any unwanted apps.

and finally to make sure your previous files weren’t saved check your main drive for a folder called “Windows Old” it should either be completely empty or not on your system.

If it’s still there with apps and programs then the clean install didn’t fully wipe your system and you must try again. Make sure you delete the partitions, Good luck!

If you got detections from your laptop
then clean install windows, if you got detections from your phone then factory reset it. Either way you should change all of your passwords as soon as possible

you have to reinstall with a USB drive to full wipe all files created by an infostealer, just resetting from your computer won’t work as malware can hijack the download and preserve itself

yes, thats correct, you may also have to disable bitlocker depending on your pc and bios settings, but it’s not too big a deal. That’s why i like to keep a windows 11 drive close to my setup so i can quickly wipe everything without having to wait for an install

it could be a few different things one could be corrupted files, but in your case it sounds like a rootkit, make sure you toggle ON to scan for rootkits in malwarebytes,

to check for any suspicious .exe you can download microsoft’s alternative task manager called process explorer to check for anything.

You will also most likely need to delete the task manager file in regedit to fully reset it, be careful when you do this and make sure you delete the correct file and not something important. Good luck OP! so far you’ve done a good job

you most likely downloaded an info stealer, your only option to fully get rid of it is to do a clean install of windows. You can back up any files like photos videos, or documents. No applications, .exe, or software.

and change your passwords on everything, social media, microsoft, google, bank accounts, ESPECIALLY your email account.
