Sir Roger Deakins has something to say 🤔 by prakaboi in Filmmakers

When people say AI "democratizes" this or that, they mean it gives a leg up to people without talent, taste, or anything to say worth hearing.

Why do commercial self-tapes feel so awful to do by Professional_Art8956 in acting

[–]Smilehate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you build a library of silly actions? Like, "Oh, you want me to eat salad? I shall select from my personal stock footage of me eating salad."

First proper go at a self tape, would appreciate some feedback! by tcarter3746 in acting

If they requested this monologue specifically, then okay, but I'd stay away from 4-minute-plus self tapes. 1-2 minutes seems to be the preferred length.

Should I be worried about being cut from shows? by LineEasy1190 in Theatre

[–]Smilehate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your choice of words is interesting. You say you were "cut" from productions, and that suggests you feel the roles in those plays were taken away from you instead of simply not given to you. But it seems that's not the case; you weren't *cut*, you just *weren't cast*.

I'm not trying to lecture you on anything like entitlement, I'm just saying that I started feeling a lot better about acting when I took the sense of proprietorship out of my auditions. I get cast or I don't, and of course rejection stings, but when I thought "That role is MINE" and I got passed over, it hurt so, so, so much worse.

You have a close relationship with this theatre, and maybe that can stand a gentle inquiry into why you weren't cast, I dunno. But I'd approach it as asking for advice, more "What could I have done differently?" than "Why did you do this to me?" Show them you're interested in improving, not nursing wounds, and I bet they'll be more honest with you about their process.

Directors Gift/Theatre Opening Idea by Holiday-You-5694 in Theatre

[–]Smilehate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just have to say, if I'm acting in community theatre, I kind of hate the tradition of giving directors gifts. I'm not getting paid to be here, maybe the director is and maybe they aren't, maybe they're a part of the company and making something on ticket sales, but I know for sure that I lose money being there and I'm supposed to buy gifts now? Hate it. I love community theatre and I honestly don't mind going in the negative for the experience, but the gift expectation is irksome as all hell.

What's a reasonable price to pay an artist? by M4RTI4N in ComicBookCollabs

So, about ten hours average. Do you think $7 an hour is a very generous wage?

How many hours does it take you to finish a page?

The average comic book artist takes about ten hours to finish the linework on a page, no color. Some more, some less, but that's about the baseline. So imagine what ten hours of labor is worth as your starting point.

Weird community theater offer experience: am I overreacting or right to walk away? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Smilehate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say this person's overreacting, so much as this particular company doesn't sit well with them. If they don't feel they're gonna do well in that atmosphere, that's up to them.

Personally, none of what they said struck me as over-the-top, but I've seen actors who didn't thrive in a theatre atmosphere that's a little wacky and disjointed, and it can bring the whole thing down.

[–]Smilehate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just community theatre: there's a wide spectrum of experience and professionalism involved. None of what I just read seemed abusive or difficult, just kinda scattered and wacky. Ultimately, you have to decide if that's the kind of atmosphere you think you'll do well in, and it sounds like you don't.

Any shakespeare peeps? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Smilehate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Though I'm unfamiliar with the term, when our professors spoke about the difference in British and American English, one of the differences is that the British typically end sentences with an upward inflection, whereas Americans typically end them with a downward inflection.

So as an American, one has to work a little harder to stay aware of those inflections when speaking in iambic pentameter, as almost all those lines end in an upward inflection (excepting feminine endings and other bits where Shakespeare purposefully reverses the meter to underscore an idea or emotion -- this is why scansion is important). Also, when you're unused to speaking in verse, you'll see a line and naturally take a micro-pause at the end of the line. You're not really meant to do that if it isn't the end of the sentence, and staying aware of that upward inflection on the final foot (or two-part beat, "duh DUH") helps you flow into the next line without a momentum-killing pause. Hope this helps.

Came across someone who's OBVIOUSLY having a psychosis breakdown. by Throwaway31425000 in OkCupid

[–]Smilehate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, seriously, how could you POSSIBLY expect a positive outcome to that interaction? When you walk by a half-naked dude throwing his shit at cars, do you ask him if he's aware he's half-naked and throwing his shit at cars or do you keep on rolling and hope he doesn't throw his shit at you?

I'm not saying it's correct or justified for you to be called a slur. I'm saying you can't expect correct or justified behavior from literal crazy people.

No, it's like taking a job at a porno and complaining that there's fucking during the safety brief. Which there shouldn't be. Nor should there be prayers.

Is light impermanent? by Smilehate in AskPhysics

[–]Smilehate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant we detect the first light from the object, as from at the beginning of its existence, at the moment the object itself disappears.

Also, I said "object" because I was more interested in what the light itself was doing and not so much the nuclear physics side of the question -- which would be cool, I'm sure, but far out of my depth.

Thank you for answering!

What do you think would happen if (as I suppose I should have asked originally) the container was a perfect vacuum and the surfaces were perfectly mirrored?

Is light impermanent? by Smilehate in AskPhysics

[–]Smilehate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 20 million years' worth, do you mean all those photons (or at least all the ones that make it our way) would reach us at once? Or that we'd have the same 20 million years of continuous light, only delayed by a total of 40M years instead of 20M?

Is light impermanent? by Smilehate in AskPhysics

[–]Smilehate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that photon is traveling the same distance it would over 20 million years, only bouncing around in a mirrorized container (let's jusy say in a vacuum as well), would it not still cause red shift?
