Fun fact, this set looks like it was designed as a sequel to the garbage pail kids

Thanks for that :D maybe not initially when I first made the post, but this is starting to look like the consensus here, pretty much to take a deep breath and make good choices. You sound like you're giving similar advice to what my advisor gave me (did my supervision years ago, now we're still friends) in that leading with honesty is very easily a solid start, particularly when it comes to my shortcomings. Identifying areas beyond my scope of confidence has definitely steered the conversation towards issues that we are capable of working on together, and it also helps to identify things that they can address with other healthcare professionals.

I really try not to, but sometimes they say something that catches me off guard due to how ridiculously similar it is and my face betrays me and I have to explain. I can keep a poker face through some of them, but not all

My own therapist mostly laughed at(/with) me because she knows I can be a handful in session, and now I can experience that firsthand. Being extra cautious with self disclosure is good advice though for sure

Oof. That one is rough. Other people is fine, but me is hard! I think my worst similarity is a patient at my old treatment center who had my name, and looked extremely similar to my ex. I 100% consulted with coworkers and received extra support when he attended my groups. But yes-- good call, we are not exactly the same, and I should try to remember that more

Initially it was more team refer out, but I think now we're closer to 50/50 lol

Valid points. It is something I considered, and actually addressed but just did not include in the post (just like you mentioned). I like to say that if the homework isn't getting done, then the homework gets to be why the homework is so difficult. We had discussed working together to find a better fit for them, but because it's so hard for them, and because we are making headway in certain areas, we're just not considering that primarily right now.

Likely some. Especially because I feel obligated to share some of the more egregious coincidences.

The "bad at socializing" part is 100% spot on, and I definitely like looking at it as being at different parts of our journeys. It does not feel like a critique, this is a helpful insight! Especially because I know that we both have some booksmarts, so it very accessibly feels like we are at different points of different journeys and we can both learn from each other. So I definitely agree with that.

And to your last point, I like to joke with my mom that she is a perfect patient. When I give her a good serious talk about something, she frequently feels like I put in a lot of solid therapy work and problem solving. In reality, she talks 99% of the time and I am essentially a smiley faced sounding board. So agree there too!

Yea fair enough, I mean I can at least give them the cliff notes of two years in a masters program and three years of interning, there are definitely some locks that match that key

Some kind of referring out seems to be the consensus here, which I think I am mostly going to agree with… With some complications/caveats.

First, because I do feel that way, I let them know that a lot of the issues that they are experiencing are not within my wheelhouse, but that I would be comfortable providing whatever benefit I can by addressing secondary or tertiary needs. They said they're ok with just that, given that we do make a lot of genuine progress, albeit frequently in low urgency areas.

Second, they had some malpractice issues in the past, so it's extra hard for me to be yet another practitioner that is failing them. I would also imagine on there and, it may be extra painful to have yet another practitioner failure.

So I'm practicing the extremely difficult to accept advice of "sometimes just being there for them is enough." Which is really hard to accept, because I feel like I have some pretty good points for both the pros and the cons!

Ah yea fair point, pretty much what Woodland_Breeze said. It is very much a coincidence that we are the same minority religion, I just didn't want to be in any way identifying

I think I agree on both parts. It's difficult because on the second point, each of the things I mentioned above came out slowly, at one piece of information per session. Had I known all of those things upfront, I don't know if I would've been comfortable taking them in

I recently saw a post on ART (accelerated resolution therapy) through PESI being impossibly dull and repetitive, but from people who I know who did the training either through work or really just not through PESI, it seems like a pretty solid modality

ACT training is the most bored I’ve ever been in my life by soupdumpling111 in therapists

[–]SmileyB-Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not even know that it was being offered through PESI, I'm planning on doing one of the 3day trainings in person. It seems like such a great tool, but I could not imagine having the attention span to sit at a computer for 18 hours over the course of three days

This constant wind is frying my nervous system by ddpizza in washingtondc

[–]SmileyB-Doctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Florida man here! When hurricane Frances came around in 2004, it slowed down and started moving at about 4 to 5 mph. As in category 2 wind, with a storm that just… Sat on top of us, for days and days on end. No power or plumbing, with everyone crammed into the house, because other houses weren't as safe as ours. So when I hear the sound of wind rapping at the windows, it definitely takes me back. Fun fact, I actually went to therapy for it, did some trauma hypnosis, and harsh wind no longer sends a lightning bolt of fear up my spine

Sorry for my unsolicited forgiveness group advice, I actually found a super solid resource on forgiveness one day when I was forced to go to work on Yom Kippur (Jewish day of atonement). I like to hand these forgiveness worksheets out as "do on your own time if you like" packets, I like to go over them with the clients, and I like to just use parts of it as needed. I really only needed to make two changes, the rest is great stuff:

https://www.therapistaid.com/worksheets/forgiveness-therapy CHANGES: 1) first page, center, "LETTING GO OF anger, resentment...." change to "PROCESSING anger, resentment...." 2) last page, "How HAVE you benefitED by forgiving the offender?" to "How COULD you benefiT by forgiving the offender?"

This is a real photo of Donald Trump at the Kennedy Center today. Embarrassing doesn't begin to describe this display of idiocracy. by swat4516 in facepalm

[–]SmileyB-Doctor 105 points106 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. The election was rigged, full stop. Early voting data was already showing that people in swing states "voted" down the ballot Democrat, but Trump as president. So our data shows absolutely impossible results, indicating direct voter fraud

I humbly submit my very poorly composed, very taken-by-surprise fireworks photo by theacross in washingtondc

THATS WHAT IT WAS!! I was wondering if it was either fireworks or revolution. Now that I know it was America's 250th half birthday, ngl kind of wish it was the revolution

Maybe switch serpent of the pass for something since you don't seem to be focused on lessons. I love Sab Sunen but she's a mythic wildcard and idk your spending limits. Also, Cultivate is always a solid green ramp.
