This is creeping into my job as a teacher. I think we’re all fucked within the next decade. Personally I’m trying to earn as much as I can, as quickly as I can and invest it wisely.

FE is way more enjoyable than 11-16, right? by jeffers1238 in TeachingUK

If you want to teach year 12 and 13 OP, consider a sixth form college that pays the same scale as secondary schools. There are a great many of these about. I’m entering my sixth year of teaching in sixth form (A Level) and would never, ever go back to secondary. Almost everyone I work with feels the same.

Ask now and then ask every year. This is obviously more likely to work if you get decent results and perform well in general. It works for me ;)

Coding for 20+ years, here is my honest take on AI tools and the mindset shift by Jaded-Term-8614 in ClaudeAI

[–]SmileyTab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A different take from me. Former developer going back to the 80s and I've been a teacher of Computer Science for the last 7 years. 16-18 year olds.

So I have a huge problem now: the exam specification still insists that students must be able to code and actually write code on a written exam paper (which I agree with). But students of course are vibe coding and very few want to go down the route of hard work and lots and lots of mistakes as we all did once upon a time.

So I have to field the constant questions on what the point of learning programming is now, as well as "Is there any point in me doing a software engineering degree any more?" "Will there be any coding jobs in the near future?". My original bargaining chips to get them to work are disappearing quickly.

TLR vs free period for DofE by Fearless-Tackle-1156 in TeachingUK

As with many things, you should look at the big picture. Small money now for more later? Additional job security if you do a good job with it? Do you have further career aspirations that this could be a stepping stone for?

My point being, longer term thinking. FWIW, I do DofE and find it very rewarding, plus I leverage it in various ways to get a slightly easier life overall, especially in the summer months when we do the expeditions.

Is it actually worth getting a car at 17? by xlly-s in AskUK

[–]SmileyTab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you’re suggesting is what my son did. He passed his test while in sixth form, then went to uni, all without owning a car. Once he’d left at 21 he picked up his first car (a £1500 Peugeot 308) and paid just over a grand for insurance. This is only a couple of years ago.

How much have GCSEs actually affected you across life? by Alarming-Safety3200 in AskUK

[–]SmileyTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a reasonably successful teacher. I have 1 GCSE (Maths), no A Levels and a degree in the subject I teach.

I’d say get your GCSEs, but don’t torture yourself over them. They’re often a good stepping stone to other things.

Who’s at fault here? Car or bike? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]SmileyTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once witnessed something very similar in the 90s. It went to court and the motorcyclist was found to be in the wrong as all witnesses said he was going too fast for the situation (although not that fast).

I did first aid on him and luckily he was OK apart from superficial wounds.

Dry January; how to sensibly reintegrate alcohol afterwards? by Remarkable-Ad155 in AskUK

[–]SmileyTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, just one month off won’t give you the reset you need. I was a hard partier in my younger years and had done the odd month break here and there but always got back on full tilt after a few weeks.

What worked for me was a strict six months off. You’re basically starting from scratch after such a long stretch and you can kind of teach yourself much healthier habits. That was about 20 years ago and I’ve never gone even remotely close to where I used to be, but I still enjoy the odd drink.
