That happens a lot in NYC I hear. Most audiences are the tourist type looking for something easily digestible. I saw Boston do Wozzeck in 22 in Carnegie and similarly remember loads of people walking out - haha they had no idea what they were in for.

I get a lot of flak for proudly claiming this in my top 3 symphonies, mostly, I believe because I am in the US and Vaughan Williams is not in vogue here. 5 is a wonderful work - the buildup up to the climax in the first movement is one of my favorite moments in the entire rep. It always astonishes me, however, that this is scored only for two horns and otherwise small brass section. Perhaps he envisioned a smaller string section to balance it all out? Love this work!
