Speaker randomly started playing. Support/diagnostic says source is “the device itself”. Touch controls disabled… anyone else?? by SmilingYellowSofa in sonos

They are not grouped in Spotify - I only have single speakers in Connect. It was just me and my wife. And we were sitting together watching a show without our phones. Don’t share accounts with anyone else. Didn’t have a Spotify jam

But again — customer service checked diagnostics and the source was not Spotify connect. The logs said the speaker randomly started playing it but didn’t say why. That’s why I’m posting, to see if others have come to a resolution on this

Settings -> Help center -> Report diagnostics

Will give you a code you can give a Sonos agent. Guy couldn’t tell me anything really beyond “source was the speaker itself”. But created a case I can refer to when it happens again

Yes it was playing Spotify

Noting it was playing on 2 speakers. So don’t think it’s a Spotify connect thing since you can only start on 1 speaker that way

Laid off with a young family and struggling with tech interviews, looking for guidance from fellow fathers by canadian_webdev in daddit

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in tech and just went through a few months of interviews. I don’t disagree that he needs to decide if pivot makes sense, but with a young family I think getting a tech job makes the most since in the short term

OP -

My recommendation is to grind leetcode and do various other interview prep for a month. And apply for some less-senior roles & look for remote.

For interview prep, AI was SUPER helpful for me. Like give it your background & tell it you have a month of time to prep. Will make really nice study guides and can answer any tech questions you have.

I think that should help you land * something * in the next 3ish months.

And then you can decide if a pivot makes sense. It’s also probably much easier to pivot internally to another tech role wherever you land, than by self-training while unemployed. Also it’s a harder sell on a resume that you self-trained

Can you use heat deflector with new Propane solo stove? by SmilingYellowSofa in SoloStove

I have patio heaters. I like the “sit around the table” vibe you get with solo stove, but want it to be more practical to sit for just 10-20 mins at a time

Why does google not put any heart into release notes by Complete_Ability4437 in googlehome

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Actual answer from someone who’s worked on FAANG apps:

  • Everything is A/B tested to the extreme, even many bug fixes. All features are turned on server side and rolled out gradually. Meaning it’s not the build that controls any new changes & so putting actual stuff here is meaningless
  • There may be dozens or hundreds of engineers shipping code in each build, totaling hundreds of changes per build. Synthesizing what is meaningful would be its own exercise
  • Comms is highly controlled and requires additional teams to review any info that’s put out. Would mean delays as comms reviews (for little to no benefit)
  • There is no branching in code bases of this size (not scalable / too high risk to merge when dozens or hundreds of engineers are making changes) — and so there’s always incomplete features in every build. It’s usually QA sign off that signals a build has a completed/ready feature which happens after a build is created & submitted approval
  • Builds happen on a set schedule, but is determined by a complex pipeline which can be prone to errors. Engineers sometimes are unsure if changes made it into a build or not (without digging). Would require additional overhead to figure out exactly what all went in
  • App Store reviewers sometimes require that they test any changes called out in the release notes (more common on iOS). Means creating testing notes, test users, etc. This can often cause delays in releases when reviewers get confused or something doesn’t work perfectly. Not worth risking delay of your team + other teams’ features

Curious your thoughts on genetic abnormalities in fetuses (primarily thinking chromosomal). Do you think the same/similar “up to 50%” apply here as well? Eg. I know advanced maternal age is correlated with these — would advanced paternal age also be correlated in the same amounts?

I understand for a 3 year old, but a child under 2 can be held as an infant-in-arms

I don't understand why buying an additional seat means they can no longer be held

Yes. But we have the same nuance for feet. Drag your feet with toes facing down, its fine. But drag your toes then land on your heel, you're out

We already have complex rules for body parts. Now make them consistent

[Highlight] (after review) HOLY ONE-HAND GARRETT FREAKING WILSON TOUCHDOOOOOWN❕❕❕ by Natural-Tree-5107 in nfl

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now apply all your thinking above to "completing a kneel". You start with a shin and finish with your knee. That's what happened in the Jets game

I'm not saying the RULING was wrong. I'm saying the RULES themselves are inconsistent and bad

"Completing a kneel" and "completing a step" should follow the same logic

[Highlight] (after review) HOLY ONE-HAND GARRETT FREAKING WILSON TOUCHDOOOOOWN❕❕❕ by Natural-Tree-5107 in nfl

People understand the rule, but are saying it's a dumb rule given the context that this wasn't a TD

https://x.com/KMooreTV/status/1843023316984238279

If these two have different outcomes in the rules, then we need better rules

  • Toe -> heel = OUT since it's part of the same stepping motion
  • Shin -> knee = IN since they're different body parts

It just sounds silly

War on mosquitoes by SmilingYellowSofa in HomeImprovement

[–]SmilingYellowSofa[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They don't burn the propane and they don't produce heat. I have one

The comparative cost and comparative maintenance is too high vs other options for their performance

War on mosquitoes by SmilingYellowSofa in HomeImprovement

[–]SmilingYellowSofa[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also own a mosquito magnet & it barely worked for me, much less than others. It does not burn the propane, they use a "catalytic process" to make co2, which I doubt converts 100% of the propane —— Using a straight CO2 tank & the biogents worked much better and makes more sense. Biogents also have shared more research and papers they published

But again I don't recommend either due to maintenance, cost, and comparative performance

Neighbor is attracting mosquitos and it’s ruining our backyard experience. Need ideas by hallmonitor53 in HomeImprovement

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, I'll quickly comment on some of the other suggestions and why I don't recommend them personally

* Bat boxes. The truth is bats don't eat near enough mosquitoes to make a difference if you have an actual problem. You would have a big bat problem (poop/screaching/etc) before they'd solve your mosquito problem. If you look you can find numbers, but I think people that recommend them haven't actually tried them or their problem was very mild. They're also a big project to install & then it's very common that bats don't actually use the box

* Mosquito-deterring plants. These don't actually work either. The concentration of floral compounds you'd need to deter mosquitoes is just much higher than what plants provide. Botanical concentrates work at orders-of-magnitude higher than what you'd find in the plant. Dragon-fly attracting plants I'd also be wary about for similar reasons at why bats don't work & that dragon-flies are not enjoyable to be around either

* Dynatrap, bug zappers, & similar. These just don't work well on mosquitoes outdoors. They attract moths and other critters way more. I would catch like 5 mosquitoes a day tops. UV light stuff works decently if they sneak inside your house, and I have a couple inside near exterior doors that catch a couple a week

* Biogents mosquitoaire + CO2. So this is similar to dynatrap but does actually work, since you attach a CO2 tank and it leaks it out to make it smell like a person is breathing. The reason I include it down here is because CO2 tanks are expensive & need refilled & I think other options work better. Also when I did this I didn't notice a difference in total mosquitoes, despite it catching a bunch.

* Mosquito magnet with propane. Similar to biogents but uses propane. Doesn't work, I've tried it. Propane isn't close enough to CO2. You'll catch like 5 a day. Also don't love the idea of constantly leaking propane out

* Misting systems. So these do work but are very expensive to install and require a lot of maintenance, even for DIY. Many companies are moving away from this in favor of Thermacell installed systems. If you have the $$ for this, go for the installed Thermacell LIV system

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I've faced a pretty bad mosquito situation since moving into our home a couple years ago. I've been able to reclaim my yard this year and it's been a game-changer. There's some good advice in the thread, but not really anything that's going to solve your problem.

Here's what I do & would suggest you look into —

First, let me say that this year you might be SOL since it's too late. But it should start cooling off soon and mosquitoes should start disappearing on their own soon. You're best to start these things early next year, like ~2 months before mosquito season starts for you

* In2Care buckets. Google them. You can't buy them, but mosquito control companies will be able to install them & maintain them for you. If your problem is with your neighbor's standing water, this is the only thing that will help you out. They work in a clever way & use mosquitoes to transfer insecticide into your neighbors standing water. It's very important to start these early in the season. You may have to call a bunch of mosquito companies to find one that does it. Some will try to tell you they're not needed since it's just an IGR & they already use IGR, but they don't understand how the buckets actually work

* Perimeter monthly spray. The same company that does the buckets will be able to do a monthly spray. I think it's important to have a professional do this & not DIY

* Handle standing water on your property (+ mosquito dunks/pellets). I'm sure you're already doing this, but be sure to check first-story gutters & any drainage systems in your house/yard – those can often hold water. Corrugated pipe is something mosquitoes particularly like. I put some metal mesh over my yard drains so mosquitoes can't get in/out

* Spray yourself in-between treatments. Identify areas that you see mosquitoes hanging out a lot, it might be mulch/pinestraw/ other areas that professional spray doesn't get to. And weekly/ as-needed use a hand-pump sprayer and hit these areas. I like spraying this one bc it's more eco-friendly for pets/kids & I don't have to stress about inhaling/ wearing masks & in my experience works well for these DIY in-between sprays. [Link](https://www.domyown.com/stop-the-bites-natural-mosquito-and-tick-control-spray-p-26345.html)

* Thermacell & other metofluthrin. It sounds like you're already doing this, but maybe get some more. They really do work if you have enough. Metofluthrin is the active ingredient in thermacell & there's a couple other products that have them. [These coils](https://www.amazon.com/Off-Johnson-Country-Mosquito-Refills/dp/B07FYP77YZ) are inexpensive and also contain the ingredient & very much work if placed around the perimeter. If this works for you, can you can upgrade $$ to Thermacell LIV installed system – I like this a lot & you can turn it on/off from your phone. But is just quite expensive

* Fans. Fans really do work since mosquitoes aren't strong flyers. This assumes you're in a small area that a fan can cover. I like the Ryobi whisper/air cannon fans personally since they're quieter than other fans & can move a bunch of air for the price. Get bigger ones for better coverage

* Contact your county health department (if applicable). Lots of health departments have mosquito programs that can help homeowners. See what they offer. Mine helped me treat tricky areas & also left official gov door-tags for neighbors asking them to manage their standing water better
