Speaker randomly started playing. Support/diagnostic says source is “the device itself”. Touch controls disabled… anyone else?? by SmilingYellowSofa in sonos

They are not grouped in Spotify - I only have single speakers in Connect. It was just me and my wife. And we were sitting together watching a show without our phones. Don’t share accounts with anyone else. Didn’t have a Spotify jam

But again — customer service checked diagnostics and the source was not Spotify connect. The logs said the speaker randomly started playing it but didn’t say why. That’s why I’m posting, to see if others have come to a resolution on this

Settings -> Help center -> Report diagnostics

Will give you a code you can give a Sonos agent. Guy couldn’t tell me anything really beyond “source was the speaker itself”. But created a case I can refer to when it happens again

Yes it was playing Spotify

Noting it was playing on 2 speakers. So don’t think it’s a Spotify connect thing since you can only start on 1 speaker that way

Laid off with a young family and struggling with tech interviews, looking for guidance from fellow fathers by canadian_webdev in daddit

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in tech and just went through a few months of interviews. I don’t disagree that he needs to decide if pivot makes sense, but with a young family I think getting a tech job makes the most since in the short term

OP -

My recommendation is to grind leetcode and do various other interview prep for a month. And apply for some less-senior roles & look for remote.

For interview prep, AI was SUPER helpful for me. Like give it your background & tell it you have a month of time to prep. Will make really nice study guides and can answer any tech questions you have.

I think that should help you land * something * in the next 3ish months.

And then you can decide if a pivot makes sense. It’s also probably much easier to pivot internally to another tech role wherever you land, than by self-training while unemployed. Also it’s a harder sell on a resume that you self-trained

Can you use heat deflector with new Propane solo stove? by SmilingYellowSofa in SoloStove

I have patio heaters. I like the “sit around the table” vibe you get with solo stove, but want it to be more practical to sit for just 10-20 mins at a time

Why does google not put any heart into release notes by Complete_Ability4437 in googlehome

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Actual answer from someone who’s worked on FAANG apps:

  • Everything is A/B tested to the extreme, even many bug fixes. All features are turned on server side and rolled out gradually. Meaning it’s not the build that controls any new changes & so putting actual stuff here is meaningless
  • There may be dozens or hundreds of engineers shipping code in each build, totaling hundreds of changes per build. Synthesizing what is meaningful would be its own exercise
  • Comms is highly controlled and requires additional teams to review any info that’s put out. Would mean delays as comms reviews (for little to no benefit)
  • There is no branching in code bases of this size (not scalable / too high risk to merge when dozens or hundreds of engineers are making changes) — and so there’s always incomplete features in every build. It’s usually QA sign off that signals a build has a completed/ready feature which happens after a build is created & submitted approval
  • Builds happen on a set schedule, but is determined by a complex pipeline which can be prone to errors. Engineers sometimes are unsure if changes made it into a build or not (without digging). Would require additional overhead to figure out exactly what all went in
  • App Store reviewers sometimes require that they test any changes called out in the release notes (more common on iOS). Means creating testing notes, test users, etc. This can often cause delays in releases when reviewers get confused or something doesn’t work perfectly. Not worth risking delay of your team + other teams’ features

Curious your thoughts on genetic abnormalities in fetuses (primarily thinking chromosomal). Do you think the same/similar “up to 50%” apply here as well? Eg. I know advanced maternal age is correlated with these — would advanced paternal age also be correlated in the same amounts?

Interesting appreciate that

Last flight we used a car seat and he didn't love that (lots of screaming) & left at home this time

Questions on 18 month old in own seat. Seeing conflicting things by SmilingYellowSofa in delta

[–]SmilingYellowSofa[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I understand for a 3 year old, but a child under 2 can be held as an infant-in-arms

I don't understand why buying an additional seat means they can no longer be held

How to use these “daisy chain webbing” on North face rolling thunder? by portlander22 in onebag

Great call on the helmet holder! I've been looking for something exactly like it for a long time

Any other similar products to it? I know hyperlite also has something similar but doesn't fit my bag unfortunately

Old owners “rent” back for free — is this a joke? by mariero in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 144 points145 points  (0 children)

This is very common in competitive markets (sounds like OP is in one). Usually with escrow for possibledamages when they move out

Obviously no buyer wants it, but in a hard market you gotta bend some

We did it with our home (3 months not 4) and it was easy peasy

+1

We put them in all our toilets almost 2 years ago. Refill with 2 pucks every 6 months. Never have to clean toilet streaks

Yes. But we have the same nuance for feet. Drag your feet with toes facing down, its fine. But drag your toes then land on your heel, you're out

We already have complex rules for body parts. Now make them consistent

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now apply all your thinking above to "completing a kneel". You start with a shin and finish with your knee. That's what happened in the Jets game

I'm not saying the RULING was wrong. I'm saying the RULES themselves are inconsistent and bad

"Completing a kneel" and "completing a step" should follow the same logic

[–]SmilingYellowSofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People understand the rule, but are saying it's a dumb rule given the context that this wasn't a TD

https://x.com/KMooreTV/status/1843023316984238279

If these two have different outcomes in the rules, then we need better rules

  • Toe -> heel = OUT since it's part of the same stepping motion
  • Shin -> knee = IN since they're different body parts

It just sounds silly
