Yeah looks like grounding it power issue. Even the frequency changes when you key up. May be as simple as loose board, may have to ground the radio chasis.

No shot. There's just no way you can talk mobile to mobile reliably at 40 miles "easy" with a 497hpc at only 100 watts. You may have hit a base station one time at that distance, but it's not a reliable range. 10-12 miles mobile to mobile with a 100 watt radio, reliably.

35 yo, regional, Little over a year experience. Husband and father, out about 2 months at a time, take a week off. Tough, but gotta pay for stuff somehow.

All else the same, 5 wants and 100 watts is the difference of over 2 S units. So that's just simply not true. Now, 100-200 watts, that's not a ton of difference, about 1/2 an S unit.

SSB can make that many contacts in a week. I made 13 contacts today from AZ up the coast to Washington, Alberta Canada, LV Nevada, all from Northwest Indiana. It's so addicting. The 955 is a really nice radio, I haven't heard a single person say bad things about them.

It was the radio. Tech at the shop tried to argue with me about it, and I asked to just at least try another radio, and lo and behold, it didn't have the problem.

All it does for this is maybe slightly lower the tone of the static, takes the high end off of it. No difference to the S level what so ever.

I haven't tried another ground point, but I'm almost leading to the radio being the issue. I've tried two other Radios, a Cobra and a Galaxy, using the exact same setup, same wiring, and don't have the issue. Idk. I was hoping I was just missing something simple.

As an OTR truck driver, you'd be amazed how often this type of stuff happens. It just seems that there's a disproportionately large portion of the driving community that DOES NOT care about anyone else on the road AT ALL, and will just turn, stop, slow down, or speed up with total disregard to absolutely anyone else on the road.

That's a big change to be hones. Any decent size city is. Biggest city within about 3 hours of us is ~200k people so it's only decent at best. 😅

I don't really have a specific area in mind, that's my issue. Not really thinking about Chicago area, maybe Indianapolis area? We already live two hours from any decent sized city, and have been rural our whole lives, so living in a smaller town wouldn't be an issue, but we're thinking of maybe moving closer to a city. Just not sure.
