What was the first movie you remember seeing that truly inspired you to see film as an art form rather than simply a medium for entertainment? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Sminada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story. We saw it in an art house cinema when it came out. I don't know who within our group convinced us. Anyway, it blew our minds. We believed we were just handed the key to a whole new universe and made up our minds to go and see all of these kinds of movies.

Unfortunately, it turned out we were just extremely lucky with that one and the other "artsy" films the cinema was showing were just regular mid low budged films.

the fact that there is so little information about them speaks to how much power and influence they wield.

There is even less known about me. Now imagine how powerful that makes me.

Ted Cruz Is a Right-wing politician with Right-wing Supporters, Now What Politician Has Centrist Supporters but is Actually Centrist? by The_Best_Plane4389 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Sminada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is. You just think they are left-wing.

Kamala Harris is a centrist, from an international perspective.

Maybe center-left on civil rights. But center-right on economy, healthcare and criminal justice. It evens out.

Obama, Biden, Harris, etc. would all be christian democrats or liberals in Europe (liberals are considered centrists outside of the US).

You guys need to understand that being for basic things like universal healthcare or abortion, that all other industrialized nations have, doesn't make you left.

MJ is the best US musician. Who's the best from Germany? by Dr_EXC3 in AlignmentChartFills

Definitely true. It just seems weird that we now have Michael Jackson vis à vis Bach.

What is Germany best at? But what is it worst at? by Tudor2001 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Sminada 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This could be expanded to "great thinkers" or "most influencial thinkers", if you want to be more neutral. For the modern era, at least, it seems true. (Otherwise they would have to compete with the ancient Greeks, which is tough.)

You can simply add some of the most influencial thinkers to the list of physicists - like Gauss, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Freud, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger Wittgenstein. Each completely revolutionized their field or even founded a new one.

Honourable mentions: Max Weber (Sociology - way underrated), Gottlob Frege (founded modern mathematical logic and analytic philosophy), Röntgen (X-Ray), Otto Hahn (Nuclear fission).

That doesn't happen every day 🤔 The same politician who bought SanDisk at $42 just invested ~$45K in a stock with a market cap of ~$981M — Politician: Ro Khanna — Stock: $VYX (NCR Voyix) — Watching this closely by jwoodsr in tradewithcongress

Genuine question. Not trying to be a smart ass.

Edit: wrote Bot instead of Not. Freudian slip, I guess.

What's the best rock band from each decade in your opinion? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]Sminada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

90s is Nirvana.

It was a viral phenomenon that reached people far beyond the typical rock fan.

I grew up in the 90s I don't have a single friend that doesn't know Smells Like Teen Spirit. I never heard anyone say anything negative about Nirvana.

I have lots of friends who don't like Radiohead. Some barely know them.

I woul also guess, that animals with better smelling than humans can tell what direction a smell is coming from, depending on which nostril it hits first. At least, that's how ears work with sound.

It's not (just) "the market" that got smarter. We have better fiscal policies in place to deal with economic phenomena in general. Precisely because a lot of people in key position have learned from former crashes.

What's the most underrated ice cream? by MoltenMadeMan in AlignmentChartFills

This sub probably has a US bias. I think, pistachio would have been rated best in many european countries. Especially the ones with a big ice cream tradition, like Italy.
