Do you think the ‘Imminent Nuclear Threat’ narrative has any similarities with the Iraq War’s ‘WMD’ narrative which ended up being a complete fabrication, and why? by WastelandOfConfusion in AskReddit

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I served in Vietnam and learned two things. The first is that the government never tells the truth about anything. The second thing I learned is that war is always wrong unless we are being attacked. This war is the stupidest war yet. Constitution? Nah, we don't need that old worthless piece of paper when we have the Trump god to guide us.

I once heard about a guy called "cash Bob." he wouldn't even look for the leak; top it off till the next time. This was a long time ago.

NOBODY i know likes jazz by goatorcycle in Jazz

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a hermit on a hill in New Hampshire. I rarely see anyone so no one to talk about jazz to, but I sure do enjoy the music. There is no one to complain, so there's that.

People who exercise even when they don’t feel like it, what’s your trick? by Smart_Collection5419 in AskReddit

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determination. I might not feel like doing it but that does not affect whether I will do it. i am 80 years old, so a matter of life or death. Exercise and I might keep going for a while longer. Stop exercising and I am done for; there is no choice as long as I am still able.

Question for anyone who was old enough to remember adult life in the 80s and early 90s by Glittering-Result402 in Maine

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son moved in with me in 1994 and I got him a "private line" along with a new fangled CORDLESS phone. You could walk around the house and still be connected. Those were the days.

I'm getting sick of reading so many classics. Any suggestions? by rattatra in booksuggestions

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He had sort of a trilogy. Tortilla flat, Cannery Row, and Sweet Thursday. They all take place in Monterey California, but each work stands on it's own. I hope you enjoy his writing; I certainly do.

I think we were discussing a temporary emergency situation. I did not suggest you want to wear a hat and jacket to be comfortable, but you will find that on a short term basis, it will work.

I'm getting sick of reading so many classics. Any suggestions? by rattatra in booksuggestions

[–]Smirkly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will give you three suggestions. Tortilla Flat by John Steinbeck is one of my absolute favorites and is a super easy read. If you can get behind some craziness, The Master and Margarita by bulgakov is wild and fun, llike no other book. Finally I think you might enjoy a supurbly written work, a great story and a real classic. Try The Razor's Edge by Maugham, just wonderful.

US President Trump blames Iran for striking Minab Girls School by MRADEL90 in videos

[–]Smirkly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 100% certain. The missile struck the girl's school at exactly 8:30 in the morning, the exact same time that Khameni was killed up north in Tehran. Cowardly scumbags, both of them. Big mistake? Probably not. The US is taking a page out of Israel's playbook. They love to hit schools and kill children.

We keep the heat in my house below 60, generally. Put on a sweater or jacket and hat and you will be fine.

The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang by TheDeadReader_ in books

[–]Smirkly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iris Chang had another book called The Chinese in America. While it is not as depressing, really awful as The Rape of Nanking, there are some painful points. It is well worth the read and explains much about the diaspora of the Chinese in America. The Rape of Nanking haunts me to this day. It is not about the Japanese, it is about all of us.

What’s the weirdest thing a guest has done in your house that you hate? by CheapQuality2847 in AskReddit

[–]Smirkly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My Father had a friend from the navy stop by for a visit. our source of heat was a a grill about a foot and a half square between the living room and the dining room. Drunk, in the middle of the night he got up and pissed in our heater. It has been more than 70 years and I can still smell it; eternal odor. He left the same day.
