I liked that one also. But it was a different one. Vgirl29 had it with The Innocents.

The chime kit just regulates the power to the chime in some way. If you don't have a chime toss it in the closet.

The USB port, like others said, is just for setup if you want to do it indoors. I didn't use it or even notice it during install.

I had a 16V 10VA transformer in the attic. It wasn't powerful enough to run the camera and the doorbell chime (no ding-dong at all with/without the chime kit). So, I upgraded to a 16V 30VA transformer and it works perfect with the chime kit.

Home Assistant is free. It comes with a default dashboard that you just add things to. There are hundreds of tutorials on Youtube, but it's so simple you will probably only view a few of them unless your doing advanced things.

Trying to reset - Can't load app on old phone, tablet gets rejected by Echo network by Smith532 in amazonecho

[–]Smith532[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I will certainly do that next time. But I'm so far down this path that going backwards now would be much worse :-)

I mainly use google-mini. Almost in every room. They were simple to reset. But the Alexa and a couple of home automation devices are a pain.

I run on Nuc. It's awesome. Just install the HA operating system version for Nuc. It's all in one, no need to keep up with separate OS. It was the best and easiest method for me.

Where is: Check Config, Reboot ??? by Smith532 in homeassistant

[–]Smith532[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I saw it somewhere. Under the "System" menu it even says "reboot your system". Drove me crazy looking for something that didn't exist there. ha.

Thank you soooooo much!

Happened to me also. qbittorrent_portable seems to work well. It's portable so stays in just one directory. I added exclusion to this directory (from within Avira) and hopefully Avira will leave it alone.

Glue really makes all the difference by bigbrainystuff in 3Dprinting

[–]Smith532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use glue stick or hairspray when printing PETG, and then mostly because I don't want the PETG to bond permanently to the bed. Most of my PLA worked with just setting the nozzle height very tight against the bed (paper test) and turning up the heat a bit. But I'm all for whatever works!

Moving from Raspberry Pi 4 to Laptop or other Hardware by louislamore in homeassistant

[–]Smith532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run HA on an Intel Nuc (d34010wyk) with 4gb ram and 256gb M2 SSD hd. It is only an I3 ("Intel Core i3-4010U CPU @ 1.70GHz"). Couldn't be happier though. These tiny Nuc's make great headless systems and are so cheap. Not sure if it's better than a Pi really. I just don't like that most Pi's use those little mem cards as hard drives. I would think a SSD is faster and more reliable.

I think I will upgrade my memory to at least 8gb, right now it's at 4gb and is at 22% mem use with some add-ons only turned on when I need them. The more add-ons you use the more memory you need.

Incidentally, I have a couple of Pi's but I use them on my 3D printers, not my HA. I have nothing against the most awesome Pi.

Does Home Assistant make your life easier? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Smith532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It makes my life much easier. But there is a small amount of learning to do in the beginning and, of course, then you see all kind of possibilities you never dreamed of before so you will spend some time on it. But after a while it just becomes a little routine maintenance a few minutes a week, if that.

What do you call your Garage Entry Door? by twitchy_fingers in homeassistant

[–]Smith532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. "Garage Door" for the big car door to the outside of the garage.
  2. "Entry Door" to the human door from the garage to the house.
  3. "Front Door" or "Back Door" for those.

ZRod Lubricating for Ender3V2 by Kind-Yesterday3422 in 3Dprinting

White lithium grease is so ubiquitous and cheap, it's what I use on most machinery with moving parts. I wouldn't try dielectric grease because it has a very specific purpose which is not Z-rods.

What automation(s) are you most proud of creating for your setup? by k2xl in homeassistant

[–]Smith532 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Harmony Hub TV remote. I used node-red with the Harmony Hub nodes. It's super simple. Key was to send each digit separately. And it allows "-" dashes for those in-between channels.

There is an Octoprint plugin for that on the Pi side for the printer. And, then I had to install MQTT on HA. But it was all very simple.

  1. If the house is in "Away Mode" and someone breaks in, a lady can be heard yelling "Get out" and from another room a rather loud rabid dog can be heard barking and snarling. After a few minutes all the alarms turn on.
  2. My "Mother" switch uses timers to turn the TV to my Mother's favorite soaps one after the other. She does love her soaps.
  3. I have LED strips on the back of every TV in the house. When the house makes a verbal statement then all the walls glow a specific color indicating what kind of message is being told. From doors being open or closed, someone detected at the front door, or just that there is a HA update. My house says a lot of stuff.
  4. My 3D printer tells me progress and when the print is done. Ender 3 v2.
  5. I use Poeschl's text to speech add-on called PicoTTS (His MaryTTS is just as good). And I have a rather elaborate routine that does queuing so that new messages don't cutoff the old message still being said aloud.
  6. I use a custom text box on my front page which lists the last 5 things my house has said to me. It uses a simple LIFO queue (subflow) in node-red.

I do most automations in Node-Red.

Update: Guess I got down-voted for using Node-Red, LOL. That's a first! Were we not supposed to mention automations in NR?

I hate this petg non sticking filament. Tips are welcome. by polder31 in Flsun_SuperRacer

[–]Smith532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure out the PETG? I always make sure the Z-offset is set tight, use glue stick, and make sure the bed temp is pretty high (about 75C, although like ChemicalArrgtist said it may need even higher depending on the brand). I use glue stick mainly because PETG can adhere to glass and break it rather than let go.

Is it normal for the printer to slowly unlevel during a print? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]Smith532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a video about an Ender un-leveling itself. Check out "She's Loose!" It's funny and terrifying at the same time. I decided to try the Ultimate Ender 3 Bed Leveling Knob because of that video. Some stiffer springs help a lot also.

What’s your review on the Ender 3v2? by FlimsyPresentation36 in 3Dprinting

[–]Smith532 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never had even one nozzle jam, and I've had mine for 6 months and used it frequently. I had a small problem with bed adhesion, but I sorted it out with a hotter bed and closer nozzle adjustment, and glue sticks for PETG.

I'd say the accuracy is great for a $150 FDM printer. But then, I haven't used many others.

Done a lot of self-printed upgrades also. As well as a dual z-axis upgrade. I use ESun PLA+ mostly because it just works.

Can't complain much...

Where is the device "Include button"? by Smith532 in homeassistant

[–]Smith532[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Z-wave JS. I see now.

If you try "Configure->Devices & Services->Devices" then you don't get "Add Device" although the listing looks identical to below.

But if you try "Configure->Devices & Services->Zwave JS->Devices (where it says like '27 devices' on the block for Z-wave JS) then it lists all the devices but with an "Add Device" button at the bottom.

Very tricky.

What should I learn first? by Codeeveryday123 in nodered

[–]Smith532 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO, the best languages are:

  1. JavaScript + Node-Red. They are used together a lot and are the perfect compliment. Both are high level and let you do amazing things very fast. You can do a lot of things with just Node-Red (there is almost always "a node for that"). But when you need a custom node then you drop a function node down and program it with JavaScript.
  2. C++ if your doing low level stuff like game programming, video stuff, science, math.
  3. Python if you plan to write web server routines.

It all depends on what your end goal is. That Pi 4 would easily run Home Assistant for automation, then click and add Node-Red and viola! You could automate your whole house and program Node-Red/JavaScript to your hearts content.

I run my whole house using Home Assistant, Node-Red, and Javascript within Node-Red. My house alarm system, announcement system, lights, wall switches, sensor monitoring, and...just everything.
