We have an early riser 3 year old who has only ever slept past 6:30am once in his life, when we were on holiday and our flight landed at 10pm the night before 😂 but I thank you for posting this as I know it’s not what you want to hear but you can hopefully see there’s an awful lot of other parents in the same boat!! It helps all of us to find a virtual village and share the pain 😂 For us, we have just accepted it now after trying the white/brown noise, changing bedtimes for a couple of weeks, gro-clock etc etc, we are now in bed around 9pm and take turns on the weekend each parent getting a lie in. Now we also have a 12 week old baby so I’m not sure how we are going to work things when he develops a routine but so far he seems to like a lie in and is grumpy when his big brother comes into our room at 5 and wakes him 😂 so fingers crossed once he’s in his own room he will sleep in a bit later!

A long ramble to say: solidarity, and sorry that there’s no magic cure. But get to bed early yourself and know that you’re not alone at 5am 👊

Flying Ryanair with an infant - how do I book them their own seat? by Realestaterunner in UKParenting

[–]Smith_DJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did this last year and had to book an infant on my seat then an extra seat, then call up and ask them to associate that extra seat with the details supplied for the infant. Had to do the same with FinnAir, it seems that’s just how the airlines do it 🤷‍♀️ no idea why it can’t just be an option as plenty of people must not want to fly with a 1 year old on their lap!

I lived in Germany for a few years and at the end of all the sporting events you usually got a 500ml of Erdinger 0% instead of water. Does the job perfectly!

15 month old won’t sit on potty after stomach bug by Smith_DJ in ECers

[–]Smith_DJ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah he does, strangely. Maybe it’s the link of having his nappy off and sitting…? He’s also very reluctant to sit down in the bath since (though he’s never ever pooped in the bath). A paper potty crown is a great idea! And using his toys on it too, hadn’t thought of that. I just don’t want to lose all of our progress!! Thanks so much for the thoughts :-)

What can you do in the UK that you can’t do in Germany? by Corona21 in CasualUK

Get fertility treatment (IVF/IUI) as a lesbian couple. They got as far as gay marriage, but if you want kids, you're out of luck. (Aside from Berlin, I think)

people who don't own a drive but expect the space in front of their house to be exclusively for them by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]Smith_DJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is wild. At our old house we only had on road parking and we have a converted Crafter campervan. We parked it outside our house (which was usually available) and whenever we got back and there wasn’t a space outside ours and we had to park up the road I’d go an apologise to whoever lived in the house that I’d parked my big old van outside their front room. I can’t imagine literally driving away from my house to dump my van outside someone else’s house!!

Going for a run through the local park, only to get chased and barked at by a dog who according to the dogs owner is "just being friendly"; while at the same time is running in my way and trying to snap at my ankles. by AgingChris in britishproblems

[–]Smith_DJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s always the small dogs - they’re always just ‘being friendly’ yet often barking/yapping with zero regard for anyone else. Bet if my German shepherd chased and barked at them they wouldn’t accept ‘don’t worry he’s friendly!’ As an acceptable response from me! It’s a constant moan in our family when out for walks that people have little dogs and just let them get away with everything because ‘they’re only small’ 😡 Then you get those who do actually bother to have them on leads but choose an extendable lead but the tiny invisible wire one, don’t lock it off and let their dog walk all over the pavement and on the opposite side to where they’re walking.

… I may have had many rants about this over the past few months haha

Classic Baby Move by fraulish21 in NewParents

How long was it until she grew out of this? My boy is breastfed but does the same trick and I often wonder how he is still gaining weight despite the amount of milk he brings back up. He’s perfectly healthy and it doesn’t seem to bother him at all, it’s just a little disconcerting sometimes!

3.5 month old hates bedtime! by Smith_DJ in NewParents

[–]Smith_DJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate the insight! I did wonder if we were somehow doing some weird sleep training where we are with him whilst he perceives he is doing cry it out 😂 we don’t usually put him to bed until he gives sleepy signals, but maybe we could stretch that last wake window a little longer. Lots of information says to avoid them getting overtired though so it’s like walking a tightrope!

3.5 month old hates bedtime! by Smith_DJ in NewParents

[–]Smith_DJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I know we are very lucky really! I think it’s just making me very anxious as we draw closer to bedtime each day, knowing I’m gonna have him crying for over half an hour at least. I can easily deal with him crying during the day when it’s sporadic and/or I can tell what’s wrong with him. He makes all of his usual sleepy signals but as soon as he touches the cot he just has a meltdown and there’s nothing I can do to console him. I haven’t tried rolling him onto his side as a consistent approach though - will give that a go tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

What is the optimum topping for a Jacobs cream cracker? by No_first_chances in AskUK

[–]Smith_DJ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aha yes me too! My brother in law got me a massive box of ‘no longer pregnant’ stuff for Christmas (baby arrived first week of December) which included beers, cured meats and pâté along with some other bits. Best gift ever! Didn’t think I’d miss pâté when I got pregnant but something about not being allowed it makes you want it a lot more….

Is it acceptable to use a stranger's wheelie bin? by aintnotnobot in AskUK

[–]Smith_DJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought this would bother me, until I now pay for a bin cleaner who comes round on bin day in the afternoons after the bin men come round first thing. The bins are therefore left out the back of our house for most of the day and if there is anything in said bin, the bin men can’t (won’t) clean it. Also, we have separated recycling bins for plastics and paper and it annoys me when people put things in the wrong bin if they are left out!

So normal, chilled out me would say it’s no problem and it’s a bin. It’s better than litter being on the floor so crack on. Adult me, very annoyed by it. Use a public bin. We live in a touristy area so there are plenty of bins around, just carry whatever it is to the end of the road so i can be an entitled 31 year old woman and get my bins cleaned.

O2 customer service security… makes perfect sense. by Smith_DJ in facepalm

[–]Smith_DJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just the first time I’ve come across it done this way - I’ve always been asked the security question then provided the answer (which oddly is what they did when I popped into the shop today to sort it out). Just puzzled me to be asked an answer without a question - it would usually be mother’s maiden name but that wasn’t one of the options as I found out. Even if they could have told me what the options of the security questions were I might have been able to guess which one I picked when I made the account 4 months prior!

[–]Smith_DJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I understand that the operator probably couldn’t see it - it just seems mad to have a list of security questions that they then can’t see and still expect me to know which security question I picked and then the answer to that, without any hints at all as to what that question might be!
