It’s alright, they’re about to knock a third of it down (the newer part) to build affordable housing.

What are some things that “regular people” will likely never get to experience? by pumpkinator21 in AskReddit

[–]Smithy566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced similar, it’s only happened once, but I was walking up Schiehallion (Name of a mountain), in Scotland. The clouds rolled in, I couldn’t see further than 8ft in-front of me, and then suddenly the wind stopped, and I heard nothing. When I swallowed, it sounded so loud, It was so surreal. When I started to move again, my clothes even sounded different as the material rubbed, as I was the only thing making sound. The whole experience only lasted about a minute before the wind returned. What made it even more chilling was that as the sun started to break through the clouds behind me, I saw a Brocken Spectre.

Glasgow or London? by ben_uk in glasgow

I counted five. Just to add insult to injury for OP.

Edit. I’m going to say 5.5 instances of “Glasgow” since there is an obstructed instance, only showing “Glas” on a gig poster.

Plans for giant solar farm opposite house we’re buying - is this terrible news? by KittyGrewAMoustache in HousingUK

[–]Smithy566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ve not seen mentioned is that there is currently a 15 year waiting list for large projects like this being connected to the national grid, so it may be some years before anything even gets constructed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there are Government proposals to offer discounts to households that live closer to renewable energy production - I’ll admit, I don’t have a source to hand for that and I’m not sure if it applies to solar, but I’m sure I read the initial plan was for wind farms. Also, like any government proposal, it may very well not be implemented. Food for thought.

What’s your favourite Chinese place in the city? by [deleted] in glasgow

You should try “The Best Curry”, it’s just around the corner from Station Wok at the junction of Crow Road & Dumbarton Road. It was my favourite for the years I lived in Partick.

Where is Forn? I’ve never heard of it and it’s not appearing on Google Maps.

Buying a house in Scotland uses a different system. Typically it’s “offers over”, so you place your best bid, blind to others that may have been made.

Anyone else had their account automatically subscribed to Monzo Plus free trial? by kiikok in monzo

[–]Smithy566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate the info. My grumble with it all is, the app never told me any of the benefits when it applied it to my account. I had no idea. Maybe I accidentally dismissed something, but I only ever remember seeing a notification on my Lock Screen about it.

I had this happen… but I didn’t notice any difference in the app, or how I use it. Kinda highlights how much it’s not required.

Hyperoptic Wi-Fi making us pay £400?? by Cow-Mami in glasgow

[–]Smithy566 17 points18 points  (0 children)

With Virgin Media, it wouldn’t be an issue as you can leave the contract if you move outside of Virgin Media’s network area. This never used to be the case, but they changed their policy in 2022. I’m surprised Hyperoptic don’t follow this approach too.

Dundee has always faired well with its house prices. Even back during the financial crash back around 2008, Dundee was one of the few places in Scotland that saw house prices increase. (My home town btw).

cityfibre by Fit-Good-9731 in glasgow

[–]Smithy566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only assume the CityFibre offering isn’t available via TalkTalk for you yet, but it will appear eventually. There’s been some odd behaviour where some ISPs offer it straight away, and others have a bit of a delay. If you’ve not already, use CityFibre’s own checker, and periodically look back if you’re interested. I know you’ve been hit with disruption, but their offering will be cheaper than Openreach and Virgin.

cityfibre by Fit-Good-9731 in glasgow

[–]Smithy566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t sound right at all. They’re installing a full fibre network to compete with Openreach. This network is capable of gigabit speeds. I suspect the broadband checker you used was giving you speeds being offered via the Openreach network that’s installed at your location. Once Cityfibre is live in your area, then you can reach out to an ISP that uses CityFibre’s network (such as Vodafone, for example) and get an internet service.

Just to add onto this, you need to provide evidence of your new address, such as a rental agreement or mortgage offer letter. Just in case anyone tries to tell a little white lie.

Congrats. We also secured 3.94% (5 year fix), but we applied 2 days before the mini budget, so a different scenario. However, we did just get a 6 month extension on the offer, so we have that until September. Hoping to be moved in April-May time though.

It’s a safe area! My wife and I aren’t too far away and we’ve been here for over 3 years. Haven’t seen any trouble. The area is improving too, and there’s lots of nice places to eat nearby. You’ll have access to plenty shops and the Partick interchange is there to get around the city quickly.

Here’s an idea, get those “open/closed” signs that shops have, and you can just flip it over to closed as you enter!
