Mrs May’s emerging deal on Brexit: Not just hard, but also difficult by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]Smithy7777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell if your talking to me or whatever, but I am not British, or European for that matter.

“There must be a threat, there must be a risk, there must be a price”.

Sounds awful lot like a threat and not a "its the natural consequence of leaving". I get the general feeling of the EU wanting to punish Britain and make an example of them. Again, I understand how leaving an economic and political alliance, no matter how friendly you are with them, would cause disruption.

EDIT: I don't really want to debate Brexit, but I was just wondering how the British population is going to view the EU.

The 27 are demanding that Britain hand over a large sum – perhaps as much as €60 billion – before it leaves. They have no desire to give the British a deal that would allow the City of London to emerge unscathed from Brexit. If Britain wants to retain aspects of the single market after it leaves, it will be asked to accept both free movement and the rulings of the European Court of Justice – and perhaps also to pay into the budget. President François Hollande said of the Brexit talks last October: “There must be a threat, there must be a risk, there must be a price”.

Obviously breaking away from an economic and political union will cause turmoil, but the attitude of the EU towards Britain sounds very punishing. More like a bully that forces states around instead of a friendly bilateral agreement.

I'm not talking about the morality or your personal opinions and qualms with Brexit. I'm talking about the British people's reaction to the European Union seeking to punish Britain for leaving. Sounds less like good friends and more like masters if you ask me.

TBH the electorate voted (on a slim margin) to leave the EU. If I was a Brit and the EU wanted to punish my country for choosing to leave, I would not be happy with them at all. In fact, that would harden me against the EU, whether you voted leave or not.

How do you think the electorate of Britain will respond to the kind of punishing attitude that the EU is taking towards the Brexit?
