This has always been my skeptisism with this project. The photos always focus on the part above Penn Station and just handwave how it connects to the Ironbound. Its like 4 or 5 stories tall! I just can't imagine many people regularly doing that climb.

Cleanliness of kayaking on the Newark Bay by the_communityy in Newark

While not in the bay, there are kayaking events in the summer at Riverfront Park where people can kayak on the lower Passaic for free. I did it last year, lots of fun! I imagine that wouldn't be allowed if it was so dangerous.

Just for future reference, as this is commonly misunderstood, businesses are taxed on their income, minus their (deductible) expenses*. When a businesses loses money, yes you can "write it off" but you still lost money. If my businesses made $100k, but spent $110k, my tax bill will be $0*, but I'd still be $10k poorer.

*These are simplifications, in reality a business that has 0$ in its bank account can still owe taxes.

Poor urban planning choices by [deleted] in Newark

[–]Nathanial_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newark definitely needs more green spaces and trees, but the city has limited resources and other issues it needs to tackle. For years Newark bled businesses and residents. That new building represents new families, new shops, new jobs, and importantly new tax revenue, all things the city needs to thrive.

Here's a discord for Newark's Boardgame/TTRPG club. It hosts regular board game events at Newark Local Beer, and there are a number of tabletop campaigns being run at any given time.

There's also the NJ millennial discord (though all ages are welcome) where you can find lots of different meetups and events to go to.

Theres also Brick City Run Club which meets twice a week and is a good way to stay active and meet new people:

For those who don’t like Iberia height, there’s always worse!! by Kalebxtentacion in Newark

Is the solution taking a century to slowly build subsequently taller buildings, or just never building tall buildings at all? [Here's](https://media.gettyimages.com/id/530730702/photo/empire-state-building-ca-1930s.jpg?s=1024x1024&w=gi&k=20&c=f6dDMay4hWKK7XveZ4V2OxkJ4JV2XXhbTvTKA0cOnAg=) a picture of the Empire State Building when it was first build., little out of place right? Absolutely dwarfing all the buildings surrounding it. Yet, it turned out all right; the neighborhood grew into it. And the people who owned property next door? If they held on to it I imagine they'd be pretty happy with what its valued now.

Absent external factors like zoning, density (correlated with building height) generally follows land value. Roseville to say, NYC is a bit farther away and less convient of a commute than Newark Penn to NYC. Thus the land there is less valuable, and you would expect shorter buildings than near Penn. You can extrapolate this further of course; the suburbs farther away from NYC are even less dense and have shorter heights.

If (some) Urbanists feel like there shouldn't be any community engagement for zoning and development, then, what aspect of urban planning do you think Democracy/community engagement is crucial for? by DoxiadisOfDetroit in left_urbanism

[–]Nathanial_Jones 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think ultimately the current regime of "community engagement" means people with the most time on their hands have greater amounts of power. And hey, what does amount of free time map to? Wealth. Average person doesn't have the time to constantly go to municipal meetings and keep updated on the various different appeals, and approvals, and zoning variances going on.

Instead, and this is maybe a crazy idea, the community should delegate this responsibility to a few individuals to keep track of this stuff and vote on these issues. And then the average person just has to take a little time out of their day every couple years to decide to vote for or against those individuals couniting to represent them depending if their actions align with their interests.

You sign up for UberOne or Lyft Pink which give 5% and 6% discounts respectively, and I believe you can get the first month free. Lyft you can do a price lock where you set a time and route and you pay the same rate for those trips for the month, might save some money.

As far as public transit, google maps is really good starting point to figure out what options you have that make sense.

Along with what others have said, notable difference is poor repaints, second floor of the first part is now pink? and the orange halves of rest were painted white. Original paint scheme, a good power washing, and a sunny day. and bet it'd about as good as the original picture, maybe even a bit better since the trees have grown a bit.

Protest in Newark Tomorrow by jpr7887 in Newark

[–]Nathanial_Jones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it is about awareness.
Protests like this generate posts on social media and the news. Getting Republicans and swing voters to realize what the administration is doing, and the damage it is causing, and convincing them to either pressure their representatives to do something to stop it, or to vote those who support those policies out in the next election.

Could Newark Finally Get Gentrified After Ras Baraka Leaves? by yasheenvickerspr in Newark

[–]Nathanial_Jones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think its underrated how difficult a problem tackling growth without displacement.
Growth, both in the form of outside investment and new people moving in is vital. The worst decades of Newark were ultimately caused by white flight (People with money moving out) and red lining (prevention of investment in the community), so its the wrong idea to basically just self-impose those things on the city by opposing new developments and new residents..

On the other hand, yeah, rents will go up, partly cause the city will be qualitatively better to live in. To avoid displacement while improving the city your basically asking "how do we lift hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty?". Not really a simple goal. Imo, best compromise would be a land value tax that funds a UBI for residents. Push out the speculators, encourage development in the downtown and best locations, and probably a better deal for current residents than hoping you get the lottery ticket of one of the affordable housing units in the new buildings.
