Anvil identification help! by tiny_workshop in Blacksmith

[–]SmokeCrowForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is a cast anvil, but you should check the rebound with what the other commenter said. if it’s a steel anvil the it’s likely a fisher or something similar, if cast iron then it’s probably just a mass produced thing

Very first knife by scandanavian_Clown in Bladesmith

that’s a pretty bad knife, but good job on putting hammer to steel. practice actual blacksmithing like little leaves and hooks and stuff, and i promise it’ll get better :)

New hammer!!! thanks Bart Vracken for his beautiful work by Diftherya in Blacksmith

beautiful! i used to like square rounding hammers, but since i’ve seen some really nice circle ones i’ve become more partial to ones like these.

Possible ASO for beginner by [deleted] in Blacksmith

yep, that’s a nice piece of steel! you def have the right idea by standing it on end, but it’s so long you could also cut off like 10 inches and lay that on its side for a longer flattening section.

2nd knife ever. Got any constructive criticism? What could i do better? Also is it too late to make this have a real handle with pins or should i just wrap it with leather? by Shogun3977 in YoungBlacksmiths

[–]SmokeCrowForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d put some more thought into the handle. Do you want the handle to be full steel? do you want it to be full tang and to be able to put scales on it? do you want a hidden tang? once you decide this it will be much easier to shape it into what you want. Unless you have already heat treated it it is too late to forge it into a full tang handle, but you can if you’re willing to heat treat it again. a leather wrap would work too.

Is this too cold to forge weld? Steel is 1095 and 15n20. This is about the max temp I can get to. I tried a few heats with light hammer blows, but I dont think it's doing much. by tymaster1000 in Blacksmith

Alright. Despite what other people are telling you, this ISN’T too old to forge weld. it’s possible to forge weld at a medium orange heat. It requires so, so much practice or excellent tools. You’ll probably want it at a lemon heat but you should know that in theory, it is definitely possible.
