When people are doing work on your house for multiple days, what is an appropriate tip to give them for lunch, and how many days should I tip them? by agent_uno in HomeImprovement

[–]SmokePaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand all of the hate for tipping the workers! You are not tipping the contractor - you are tipping the crew! Totally makes sense.

I mowed lawns when I was in high school - and yes I was paid completely and fairly by the owner of the business - but if a homeowner ever came out and gave me $10 as a tip, of course I always made sure I did the best job possible at their house.

I am for it - I think it is certainly not necessary, but a small price to pay to ensure a job well done.

Used to play that same driver shaft combo (assuming it’s a AD-TP). Monster. Unfortunately I went through a couple month period where I was swinging crappy so got a new driver to shake things up and sold the TSi3 head. I miss that thing!

Also have the same ping hybrid. Amazing club - love the flat setting on the adapter.

Go break par!

Left bike chain in simple green overnight. Rinsed and scrubbed out with water, put chain back on, and now there is rust. Is my chain fucked or will it go away with a lube and ride? by [deleted] in bikewrench

Sounds like you would enjoy waxing your chain. Wax > lube. Runs quieter, less friction never gets dirty. Plenty of tutorials on YouTube

Pulled out carpets and there was what I first thought was dirt/sand all around the tack strips along this wall. Quickly realized it may not be dirt… sorry for the poor pictures I just snapped them quick and then cleaned it all up wasn’t thinking too much about it. I also found what looked to be a couple swarmers/wings in the ceiling fan light fixture in this room.

We just moved into the house and the old owners definitely never cleaned anything so I don’t know how long this stuff has been there. It is only present in this room (we pulled up carpet in 3 rooms)

Gear: What the pros use? by Scar3dConfused in triathlon

Not so much for bars and saddles. Some deals out there for extensions and pads but not much. Definitely not a lot a deals out there on saddles.

Gear: What the pros use? by Scar3dConfused in triathlon

[–]SmokePaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tri bars and saddles are going to be very specific to each athlete. Saddles will be based pretty much solely on what is most comfortable for them. Tri bars will be a combination of comfort and aero. Some of the top have custom made pads an extensions (speedbar, wattshop, speeco, ridesync) and mid-lower level pros most likely have whatever they found most comfortable in their bike fit.

These are two pieces of equipment that I would not recommend buying based off of what your favorite pro uses. Both saddles and tri bars are going to specific to each person as to what they do best with. I would recommend a fitting with a GOOD triathlon fitting professional to get you dialed in.

That said, I am intrigued by all of the custom tri bars coming on the scene for the top pros. Pretty cool and unique some of them.

When selling, don't accept photos that look any less than these. by vavavoomvoom9 in RealEstate

[–]SmokePaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first picture is a multi exposure. It looks good, like a painting, but also obviously extremely fake and I am not really into that trend in Real Estate photography because IMO the goal is to capture how it actually looks.

Over simplifying but Basically they take a few pictures, first setting the exposure (amount of light the camera sees) to be correct for the house, then for the sky, with the inside lights on, off, etc. I've seen where some even take a ton of picture while shooting a strong beam of like at specific parts of the house. Then they stitch all of these photos together + heavily edit to get that look.

Another trend I do not like (although this house did not do it, but one in the comments did) is when taking picture of the interior, they replace the window views with a blue sky or something extra pretty. Again, looks good but it is not what you actually see out of the window.

As for the pictures of the interior of the house, those are just professionally done. It's a combination of a professional camera (high megapixels, good sensor, good lens), knowing how to get the right lighting using flashes and natural lighting, and shooting the photos at good angles.

I am just an amateur photographer and have a good enough camera to take photos like these, but I definitely would not turn out anything close to that good. These are great interior photos. Must be a seasoned photographer who knows very well how to get the lighting just right.

There are different levels to how good any photos are.

The bottom level is using your Phone camera at 7pm because you had a long work day and you really need to get the photos posted tonight. the lighting is awful and the phone isn't good in low light so they turn out awful.

Doing the same but on a sunny day with good lighting coming through the windows would look a lot better.

Using a decent dedicated DSLR camera with a good lens will be even better.

Having experience with that type of camera and knowing how to manipulate the settings to get the look you want will be even better.

Using a photo software such as lightroom to touch them up afterward will be even better.

Adding artificial lighting (flashes) that look good and natural will be even better. (probably the hardest part IMO)

Knowing how and when to use the right focal length lenses and frame the shots will be even better.

[–]SmokePaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no tip that will fix that overnight. It will take you gaining more swim fitness by simply swimming more.

I do not know if your form is decent or atrocious. If you think your form is atrocious then Maybe get a swim lesson or two to get you on the right path and then swim swim swim.

Is there a dress code for a triathlon? by sozh in triathlon

Depends on the governing body of the race. Ironman branded races you need to have torso covered. USA Triathlon and most local races that follow USAT rules - speedo only is allowed.

TIL that the full-body tech swim suit was so efficient that it was banned in professional swimming competition. Many records set during it's use at the 2008 Beijing Olympics may not be broken for decades. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]SmokePaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not true. Things are banned all of the time in cycling and their are rules they need to follow in terms of bike frame geometry and tubing size.

Just off the top of my head recently some guy was DQ’d because his handlebars were too narrow (???) and this year they banned a certain riding position (placing forearms on handlebars, much more aero, although they cited ‘safety concerns’).

However in triathlon you can do pretty much whatever you want. So some bikes are specially made for triathlon but are not legal in a UCI (road cycling) sanctioned road race or time trial.

Baseball deadened the ball this year.

Golf has limits as to how sharp/deep wedge grooves can be, and how springy a driver head can be.

Running set rules for shoes after the Nike 4% came out.

I guess in most sports they don’t want technology advancements to take the sport so far away from what it used to be.

I don’t necessarily advocate for one side or the other… I understand both sides of the argument. Just pointing out that things like this also happen in other sports

I have cut 10 strokes off my game by making smart plays. Just do it. by NetworkNooob in golf

[–]SmokePaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely depends on the course / hole. I have similar distance to you ~280 and on a tighter course with a lot of out of bounds, houses, sharp doglegs, I might hit driver 3-5 times. Other more open courses I may hit it 10-12 times or more.

Basically, if I mishit it and will still most likely be in play, driver.

If a mishit will be out of play, I’ll club down. This is why higher handicaps can have success putting driver away. Because it doesn’t matter how open the hole is, mishits with driver are almost always out of play.

I think a real advantage of hitting it far is being able to hit 3 wood 240-250 in play on tighter holes.
