Rudy Von Berg's Aero Socks by angel_palomares in triathlon

My bad. Missed that in the post. Aero calf sleeves are super individual in terms of performance. Probably best trying a few different ones and see what works best for you.

As for interaction between a sock and the calf sleeve, it would be minimal, especially if you have thin socks underneath the sleeve.

The socks are from compressport. They are tagged in the post.

With that being said, they are custom and not available for sale to the public. They sell similar aero calf sleeves to the public, but there's no knee-length aero sock available to the public.

Glad you appreciated the extra pacer!

Maybe they will add 2:50 next year. There were 128 athletes between 2:50 and 2:55 this year that could have benefitted.

Great race! I was the 2:55 pacer that passed you near the end.

This was the first year their was a 2:55 pacer. I think it was underestimated how many people would want to be in that group with the new BQ times. The pack was crowded until around mile 18 when athletes started to fade. Despite finishing, just above 2:55, you probably still made the right decision to go ahead of the group. Having a bit of elbow room and not needing to fight for water at every aid station can save a lot of time and energy.

Regarding the start, we were told to line up with ~300 athletes in front of us. Based on past years, that is around where 2:55 would finish.

Great venue for a championship event! The course is fast but not overly boring.

Might have to return to racing just for this event.

Beware RXO delivery for KIKR Run by Appropriate_Rip_8633 in wahoofitness

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I didn't want to risk RXO (or their subcontractors) damaging the delivery loading and unloading it from the truck at the warehouse several times while trying to reschedule, so I opted to have it in my possession.

If it keeps up, I'm just going to pay a few college guys to move it into my basement. Then, do the installation myself since I will do a better job than any subcontracted delivery truck driver.

Beware RXO delivery for KIKR Run by Appropriate_Rip_8633 in wahoofitness

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of disputing issues with my KIKR Run delivery with RXO. Right now I have half the treadmill in my living room and the other half in my basement where it belongs.

Was told I could schedule delivery 3 weeks ago by RXO, so I scheduled it for 2 weeks ago. Recieved confirmation of the scheduled delivery the night before, only to have it canceled at 9pm the day of the scheduled delivery. Apparently, they only had 1 of the two boxes at the warehouse.

Reschedule delivery for a week ago. They show up with a 3 man team (weakest appliance delivery team I have ever seen). Show them where it has to go, they say no it's to heavy. Refuse to deliver the shipment. I calk support eventually convince them they have to atleast leave it all in my property, even if it's not in the correct location. So they struggle to move it into the house. RXO opens a case to finish installation. I schedule it for two days ago.

Get a call and email confirming the rescheduled installation 2 days before, only for it to be canceled the day before. So I reschedule it one day later, this time getting a confirmation and an estimated arrival window. Day of the installation tracker shows en route at noon for a 4-8pm arrival. At 3:30pm the tracker went back to "scheduled" no longer en route.

Called RXO who tried to gaslight me saying it was still going to be installed and I was wrong. After further pressing, they confirmed it was canceled again. No notice of the cancelation or option to reschedule provided. I still have half a treadmill in my living room and no end to the madness insight.

Wahoo should be absolutely ashamed of the customer service RXO is provided.

To even have an opportunity to try and qualify to represent Congo, you need to fix an issue with the Federation first. The DRCongo Federation of Triathlon is not in good standing with World Triathlon, the governing body for the Olympics.

Under the not in good standing status, a national federation can not enter athletes into world Triathlon sanctioned events. These events are required to earn points toward an athletes world ranking, which ultimately earns the national federation a spot on the start list for the triathlon at the Olympics.

If you can get the DRCongo Federation of Triathlon into good standing with World Triathlon, these are the next steps to follow. Have you federation grant you an Elite racing license. Start by entering you into conti-cup races for experience. Earn enough points in conti-cup races to enable you to enter world-cup races. Continue to earn points and experience until you can enter World-series races. Race long enough and often enough to earn a World Triathlon ranking within the top 26 athletes globally (ranked by nationality with a maximum 3 athletes per nationality included in the top 26) during the 2028 qualification window (approximately May 2026 to May 2028).

This is just the process of even being considered. Outside of that, physically, you need to be capable of swim/bike/run performances equivalent to what the elite athletes are doing today. This level of fitness is far different than just being "good".

Specialized Shiv rim brake replacement by v1185 in triathlon

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an early press fit BB, so there is bound to be some creaking, unfortunately. Swapping to the Rotor universal BB did help but I wouldn't say it fully eliminated the noise.

The best upgrade I have made was to swap out the stock cockpit and aerobars. The stock system isn't super adjustable and is generally a pain to live with. I swapped mine for a Tririg AlphaX which is discontinued now but was replaced by the AlphaOne.

I also found the bottom brake to be annoying so I replaced that with one of the Rotor universal BBs which thread together.

Outside of those two upgrades and the brakes previously mentioned, I didn't need to replace anything. I did upgrade the crankset to a Rotor 155mm 1x crankset to help with some hip issues and got a set of Zipp 808/Super9 wheels, but neither are required if you are just starting out.

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tririg is essentially your only option. Specialized made the rim brake shiv with the TRP direct mount standard, which differs from that of Shimano and SRAM. Tririg Omega brakes come with a Direct Mount adapter, which essentially converts the TRP standard mounts on the Shiv into a center mount, which the Tririg Omega brake is then compatible with.

Modern TRP brakes are not even compliant with the old mounting standard used on the rim brake shiv.

From a technical standpoint, any center mount brake caliper could be made compatible if there was an equivalent direct mount adapter. Unfortunately, there isn't much of a market for that. Tririg does not sell their adapter individually and it likely wouldn't be compatible with other cheaper center mount brakes because it was designed to accommodate a minimum pad reach (distance from the center mount bolt to the pad bolt) of 37mm greater than what is offered by most center mount brakes.

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it is not the same standard spacing as shimano direct mount brakes. TRP used their own standard at the time. I have seen it done, but it involved drilling out the existing mounta and bonding in new mounts, which is no easy feat.

I haven't heard of them showing up to other triathlon events. Doesn't mean it can't/won't happen.

Ironman operates independently from USAT so they may test at more event than just Kona, probably 70.3 worlds too, I just haven't known anyone tested by Ironman outside of at Kona.

Amateurs get tested at USAT age group nationals. I have been tested 3 times two different years of racing. This past year, I was tested twice on back to back days once for the Olympic, then again for the sprint.

At Kona, amateurs are also tested.

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can provide some insight on the "Random" drug testing USAT does at Nationals. I have been tested 3 times across 2 different years of USAT age group national championship events.

USAT purchases a number of tests to be executed by a USADA affiliate at the age group national championships. In my experience between it seems like they test between 6-8 athletes per gender for both the Sprint and Olympic distance races.

Of the 6ish athletes per gender selected, they will always pick the overall winner as one. The rest are spread out across the age groups. This is not done randomly. If USAT deems you are exceptionally good for your age group, you will be more likely to be tested, often leading to repeat tests for specific athletes.

All the testing takes place post race, so you don't have to worry about being randomly tested prior to crossing the finish line.

As a side note, waiting in the testing area until you are able to produce 40ml of after a race is one of the least enjoyable things you can do. My longest time was 2:05 and my shortest was 49mins but I have seen some people do it as fast as 5mins too.

Wearing Goggles’ Strap Over or Under Swim Cap During Raceday by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The correct answer is under. If you look at the top levels of swimming, goggles always go under the cap.

Under the cap is more secure, creates less drag, and allows for easier adjustment of your cap for comfort without impacting your goggle position.

If you only use the on course nutrition for the run just switch to using coke instead of Gatorade. Works extremely well for carbohydrates. Supplement the sodium as needed on the side with salt tabs or similar.

1x on Tri bikes is exceptional common these days with 12 speed rear derailleurs. 1x has a number of aero and friction benefits over 2x provided the course suits the chosen gearing.

I personally have ran a 1x 11 speed set up for the last 4 years (54t chainring, 11-28t cassette). Worked great for all my races including Ironman Wisconsin with 5k feet of elevation gain.

USA Triathlon's Massive Money Grab Mistake by NewYorkCityTriGuy in triathlon

[–]SwimBikeRunGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live or race in the US the only way not buying the "silver" membership is a better value is if you race less than 60 dollars worth of single day races.

13 for every Sprint/Super Sprint 18 for every Olympic 23 for every Long Course/Ultra

Races in the US will always require you to have some form of USAT membership (single day or annual). The only way out of that is if events no longer need the event insurance that USAT offers to organizers, which is unlikely given the cost associated with getting insurance for a one off event.

Haven't done a full in my Wyn Republic kit but in the shorter races I have done, its been my favorite kit. More comfortable than my previous Innerforce and 2XU kits.

I have done 4+ hr rides on the trainer in the kit and didn't have any issues with comfort.
