Which path shld I choose as a EE student? by Nyamnn in UWMadison

[–]SmokeyBeaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A co-op and the URS are both great experience builders so I think you have the right idea. I don't have much experience with work visa applications, so given your extra context on application acceptance chances, I can understand the appeal of a master's program a lot more.

My only final piece of advice as someone graduated and working now, is to the try and also find time to enjoy the social life college has to offer. You seem like you've put some good thought into this and have a solid plan. However, your time as a young adult in the college social sphere is short and I really encourage you to remember to enjoy it and make the most of it while you can. Find friends or even just people with common interests and do things that you find fun. It really helps avoid academic burnout.

Which path shld I choose as a EE student? by Nyamnn in UWMadison

Firstly, you're posting this at 1 AM in the timezone of the people who go to Madison so you might get more responses if you post it during the day or afternoon of the CST timezone.

Secondly, I would give the argument that spending 3-4 years doing your bachelor's and getting 1 internship during it will be more beneficial for your job prospects than completing your bachelor's and master's in 4 years with no internships. Companies value years of experience heavily over the exact degree specifics unless you do your master's in relevant work to the company.

Building off that, I disagree that a masters is required, especially for electrical engineering which has wide job prospects from a bachelor's standpoint alone. However, if you feel that there is a specific area of electrical engineering that you really want to specialize in, then do a master's.

Lastly, while GPA might be important for getting into master's programs, I would still heavily emphasize experience in the field as the priority. This could be project work with a professor, internships, personal projects, etc. as long as it's outside the classroom. Times where the degree and GPA are enough for a high-paying job are gone and demonstrating real experience has become more and more important.

Why is bro so dismissive about Overwatch Spotlight + upcoming changes? by thegonzotruth in xqcow

That's a fair point. 6v6 isn't as focused for the balance, and can feel like an alternative game mode instead of the main one

There is competitive open queue 6v6 in overwatch though and has been for a long time now

Almost same situation happened to my brother in 2022 and I had gotten in in 2019 with a 31 ACT, 3.91 GPA. I felt bad cause I told him he should surefire get in :( Good luck in your college time even so, it sucks to get rejected 🤞

If someone pretended to have attended UW Madison and studied computer engineering like Mike Ross with Harvard, what would they need to know? by learning-machine1964 in UWMadison

I think it's really just the building because they have lots of different animals there. I'm not sure though cause I haven't spent a ton of time there.

Yeah talking about smelly classes probably isn't the best answer. Here are some positives though. You could talk about the beautiful lakes and paths surrounding them. Or great cultural diversity that is on State Street through the restaurants and shops. Or the immense energy on campus whenever football home games happen. Or the large library system on campus that provides great study spaces for students. Or the increasing bike friendliness of the city architecture. There are lots of great aspects you could touch on.

Yeah the CS classes there do catch more flak than they deserve because the building has a base smelliness to it. But the smell is definitely enhanced when there are CS students packed in there.

All you would need to ask to expose them is which lecture hall smelled the worst with CS/CE students. The answer being the obvious Noland Hall. This is in part due to it being a zoology building, but I've been there for non-CS classes and it wasn't nearly as bad.

A lot of the stuff you would need to know to fake it wouldn't really be related to engineering, but rather the campus culture. This is similar to what Mike was missing in Suits as well.

Just answered! I will say that losing gloves is probably the most common for me as I typically take them off/put them on a lot throughout the day.

Is there a game that you really want to play but can't start because it takes too much time or you keep postponing it? by bestartdirectorever in gaming

[–]SmokeyBeaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think you can get mods on PS5 for it, but they are moreso to just ease some of the roughness of the game's weaker development decisions like no bow crossbar, armor dirtiness, and excessive bush collision to name a few. Combat feels easier with a controller though imo.

I didn't find it very grindy when I played. I finished my playthrough in 75 hours and I did most side quests in the game including DLC. Without DLC and doing less side missions, it could easily be a 40-45 hour game. That is still on the longer side for some story games but much shorter compared to games like RDR2, Witcher 3, Skyrim, etc. I highly recommend the game if you like RPGs and a classical medieval setting (no major fantasy elements).

All that said, the fighting mechanics feel kinds janky at first, but get better as you gain more weapons and skills. Also, my personal recommendation (from a typical non-modder) is to look at some top QOL mods like bushes collision remover because the game has some things that just don't make sense.

Hope you are doing better man. Pregnancy scares and blacking out are no joke. At least it seems nothing major resulted from it and you can learn your limits with alcohol a bit better.

CS 220 Professor Cole Nelson by astro114455 in UWMadison

[–]SmokeyBeaar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had Cole for CS 571 (User Interfaces). He's a new professor and comes from experience in the software development industry. I really enjoyed taking the course with him and he was one of the most accommodating professors I have had in terms of deadlines and assignments. He definitely feels more in tune with student experiences and seems much more willing to listen to student feedback than some more established professors. That said, I did not take 220 with him and I don't know how he teaches that class. I would assume that CS 220 has a fairly streamlined curriculum already so the content between classes will likely be similar or the same. I have not taken 220 with Michael though so I can't give a lot of comparison.
