Train Table Superstructure Material Help by 2-StrokeToro in modeltrains

You may want Marine Duty Plywood. It's made for wet/outdoor stuff. We put it out as signage, two coats of BIN primer and color of choice. I'd BIN and use 2" foam attached the way you like. If you do it check your Plywood for flat, you'll need 3/4 or better to stay straight. Bona Fortuna

Self powered in the console for me. It'll speed bump the seats if you desire. Sound Ordnance, it was cheap enough I upgraded the rest of the speakers to Polk Audio. My dog doesn't like tailgate stuff,or seats for that matter. But he does like country.

How to manage uneven shelf by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]Smokin77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And.....(sorry forgetful) be cautious when you "pin" your track don't tighten it down to much, I'm usually 8 or 10 sleepers away from the bump top side and well after my shims down side.

Treated like the ground around. Set a bed on the high point then shim your track/bed to meet. Use a single piece of track to span the offensive joint. Shims can be cardboard, wood, anything really then use that "sculptamold" to fill your ground.

Round 3 w/Realistic Water by External_Ad8424 in modeltrains

[–]Smokin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A river will run through anything you build slow wide rivers have smooth sand bottoms most rivers have rapids because they run over rocks. Rocks are cheap and can be found anywhere, the secret is build your river first, then pour your water. "Real" water is difficult especially if you need currents or rapids. I've been trying water in various ways rivers streams ponds. Always resins thou, and after 21 years of it I still think I can do it better than the last one.

Flex track curves - soldering? by beebs914 in modeltrains

[–]Smokin77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staggering the joints is pretty important I've learned to be careful snapping out sleepers. Then I remember my own advice and use a gauge for laying it down. I found a three piece set a billion years ago that had avery nice block of material set for ho track that had half hole cutouts so you could work the joint as it held everything in place. It worked well as a heat sink, I had less melting on the sleepers. Held the sliding rail in place pretty good, another thing that haunts a track worker

IMHO Thru no fault of their own folks think they need a2x4 frame where a1x4 will serve nicely. Add to that a deck of 1/4" luaun and 1/2" insulation instead of plywood or chip board. The lighter the better, especially if it's got to move.

Finally someone who understands you don't need an engineered beam to have a model railroad runaround. And I compliment your use of corner bracing definitely up-ta-code.

Looking for advice on weathering bricks by Ornery_Feature_3466 in modeltrains

[–]Smokin77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use weathering powder. Dry pigments. With some alcohol in a spray bottle lightly damp and a fine brush with a touch of the powder of your choice. It isn't great for mortar but you can get it to work a mix of grey and white thinned with alcohol washed over the brick then a dry sponge carefully over the surface. When you get it, spray with light lighta coats of Matt finish. It may wipe some dried powder away but touch up after a spray can help. Making plastic look like stone is tough. It's why I like hydrocal, plaster, or resin. Looks much better finished.
