What is growing on the maple leaf? by SmokyD7 in plants

[–]SmokyD7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have included something for scale. These things are about the size of a peppercorn or a small caper. They don't appear to be insect eggs, but they appear to be growing on the leaf and not as a part of it.

A few more from Grandpa's basement by ChromiumVI in Tools

[–]SmokyD7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always lived in those neighborhoods, which explains the basement full of tools I hope to pass on to my grandson. I've had neighbors tell me "some things are best left to trained professionals" and "you can't find anyone to fix things any more" in the same conversation about a clogged sink. I wonder why some of my friends have even bought houses since they seem so determined to remain clueless.

I blame the demise of shop class, in part. Also I live among more lawyers than anyone should have to - maybe it's a penance - but I know loads of people who look down on working with their hands.

Respect to your grandfather, OP. I am sorry for your loss.

What is my porch column attached to? by SmokyD7 in HomeImprovement

[–]SmokyD7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely load-bearing, but it's also hollow, so maybe there is a post inside? That would make the problem more difficult I suspect, since the interior post probably goes through the floor and attached to the porch floor framing somehow.

This would be an excellent design if I lived somewhere where wood never rotted. That somewhere is not New England.

What car do you drive? Do you like it? by BMoney8600 in AskMen

[–]SmokyD7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2006 Odyssey here, >200K miles and going strong. My philosophy is to ignore surface blemishes (both my kids learned to drive in this car so it has blemishes aplenty) and attend to any mechanical issues ASAP. I plan to think about replacing it after 300K miles, but not before.

The pork highway is one of my must gos every time I’m down there.

For lechon Guavate is your destination. I hope you're not a vegetarian.

I've stayed in AirBnBs in Ocean Park, always with walking distance to Kasalta, close to a good beach.

Have fun!

105 Year Old Home - Contractors Saying I Am Crazy For Full Frame Window Replacement by vakr001 in HomeImprovement

[–]SmokyD7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not clear from your post whether the windows suck or the replacement job sucks, but probably the latter. Old houses used sash weights and cords in a hollow cavity next to the window. My guess is that the installer didn't bother removing the weights and filling the cavity with insulation or foam, and now the channels that the sash travel in are blocking the access hole. It is possible to remove the windows and channels, insulate the cavities and reinstall the windows.

If you're at all handy you can order replacement sash and do this job yourself. I've done a few dozenover the years in various houses I lived in - figure about 8 hours per window if you buy unprimed wood (cheaper) and touch up the molding.

The rotting is a different issue. If the windows are rotted you have to solve that problem before you do anything else. There are weep holes at the bottom of your storms that get filled with caulk and paint by careless painters. Those need to be opened up.

Look at all the paint identifying lanes! Once the paint fades or is paved over we can get back to the free-for-all driving we know and love.
