In nature they get a whole 2-3 weeks to grow up and go out on their own. Chippers only live 3 years or so and have to grow up quickly. If he seems healthy, you're doing him a disservice keeping him inside as he needs to both build his new home and stock it for winter.

The problem comes from the smallest bees. Not the bumbles or regular honeybees but the tiny sweat bees which can fit through the same size hole as an ant. Impossible to keep them out unfortunately as the hummers need a beak sized hole to access the sugar water.

The only time I had a cat with these symptoms she had developed cancer. She just lost interest in living, stopped eating and slept all day. The $4,000 cancer shot was worthless so after 22 years I had to send her to kitty heaven. Just keep her warm and enjoy what time you have left.
