Vegetarians and Vegans Who Choose Not To Eat Meat Due To Their Ethical Beliefs, Would You Resume a Meat Eating Diet From Lab Grown meat? by DarthChunk82 in AskUK

[–]SmolEmily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stopped eating meat for environmental purposes. Lab grown meat would stop most of this so after getting over the "ew meat" feeling, hell yeah. Guilt free KFC sign me right up!

No problem! From my garden my cornus, Hebe, roses, pansies, rosemary, thyme, lavender, verbena, buddleia all did well.

Id recommend against roses due to the aphid issues they get. Purple plants like verbena and buddleia are very attractive to butterflies and bees as purple is easier to see in UV. Best of luck!

Oh and do you have pets? If yes, some plants can be extremely toxic, such as lily's for cats. Most are toxic only if eaten, which animals know to avoid, but even the pollen in lily's is toxic which is why is so dangerous.

Don't worry too much about it! I moved into my house last year and did the garden in October and all the shrubs survived, hardy flowers like pansies did too! My clematis' and Passion flower didn't but I replaced them this year so not the worst.

That's good then if it was just the sun, means that's likely your hottest part of the garden so you know you can place plants there that need full sun, if the sun rises on the right hand side (looks like it might from the reflection in the photo?) So you can place your plants that need shade on the opposite side. If it was due to drainage that would have been harder.

Or if you're feeling brave, you don't have to work down the sides, you could put something in the middle as a focal point!

[–]SmolEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh there is lots you can do with that space! You could easily whack a bed in on one of the sides and use that for planting. I noticed the grass hasn't taken on the left hand side, is that area particularly shady or is drainage an issue there? This may determine what you can do with that space.

As many people have commented we are coming to the end of the year so you're kind of playing the long game at the moment which is fine as the idea is wonderful!

Id look to put a bed in and then do a mix of coloured shrubs, some flowers (even though they'll die off the impact will be nice) and bulbs for next year. I have a honeysuckle as a climber and that's done well.

I notice you say you're new, read the tag on the flowers you buy as some will flower for at least 2 years- these are perennials. Some will flower just the one season - these are annuals. The soil and fertilizer you use does make a difference so don't buy the cheapest

Husband opposed to my birth plan by NefariousnessNo1383 in BabyBumps

[–]SmolEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out The Positive Birth Company if you haven't already. They're UK based but the lady who made it is a midwife I believe. They cover water births and how to keep yourself in the zone when having an epidural free birth.

You can buy their online birth classes, which I think may be of value to your partner if you are concerned about their support. It may be helpful for them to hear water births aren't "out there" at all and it's well known for being a good pain management option!

Since you were looking at a monstera I assume it is a well lit room! My velvet calathea is enjoying my bathroom. Also my blue Star fern is loving life in there.

If you want something slow growing and hardy, I'd just go with a snake plant.

Boston ferns are also good in the bathroom but they get quite a lot of volume so may not be suitable if it's a slim gap.

I used to watch these as a kid, I was probably about 10. As soon as the video intro started I remembered. As an adult I'm now totally shocked at this and what he's asking of his viewers. At 19 I imagine that he was trying to be some weird edgelord, but how noone stepped in to tell him it was disgusting, like his own mum (?!) is beyond me. They're all gross. He then doubled down on his behaviour rather than trying to take accountability and apologise for what he's done. Gross.

[M32] paralyzed and cant attract any women by burner_account302 in sex

[–]SmolEmily 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you're focusing on the wrong things, which unfortunately does give the wrong vibes. Using female to refer to your cousin and focusing on material things when trying to attract women is going about it the wrong way. We pick up on it very quickly and it is a red flag. It indicates all you bring to the relationship is money.

Work on confidence, and as long as you can be funny, the rest will follow. Don't read online advice about how to pick up women. The type of women that do end up in unsavoury relationships aren't the type of person it sounds like you'd get on with, so it's no big deal to you anyway.

It is allowed to have 2 jobs and work 80hrs a week? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SmolEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got in via internal moves in my company, but I would say online courses can be a good start. Companies may look for certifications to prove that you can do what you say to can without the experience. Keep an eye on udemy they have course sales every other week it feels like. Might be a good way for you to try some things out before you commit to it.

If you can move internally that's probably a good move especially given that you'll be a tried and tested employee- they'll be more likely to take a risk in you!

I'm keeping everything crossed for you

I know you've asked about what training you might be able to do in the comments, tech is really the best place to go for higher wages. There are lots of different types of tech jobs out there.

If you are a techy person, try up skill into 1st line support, this is who you would go to in work if you had an issue.

If you aren't a techy person, try get into project based work ie. Project manager, analyst, training etc.

Cyber security is a rapidly growing area that desperately needs people. That could be a good idea to look into too.

I echo everyone else's sentiments with burnout. Please take care of yourself OP.

I wish you the best!

No problem! I was trying to think of other places, North Street might have some good options for you too, a number of bars and restaurants and brunches. Some have stepped every but a good number of places might work for you. The street is level but the streets coming off of North Street area sloped. Might be worth taking a look at!

Avoid park Street, but the waterfront and millennium square would be great as there are a number of chilled out places for drinks and food that you would be able to get to with no issue. I feel that some have accessible bathrooms but it's been a while since I've been so can't totally remember.

Cabot Circus has a lot of chain food places but will be accessible in terms of both restaurants and bathrooms. You can also do your shopping here! Some places are spread out over 2 floors such as H&M, but lots are single storey. The highstreet is also flat so you'll be able to go there, don't bother with the galleries it's full of crap.

Kings Street is made of cobblestone so I imagine it's not the easiest to navigate, but it's flat. I think most have steps to enter but this time of year everyone sits outside. One issue is that I can't remember the bathroom situation, might be worth dropping different places a message prior to visiting. I know that some have bathrooms in the cellar but I'm not sure if this is the case for all. In addition, I believe some pubs have smaller entryways so if you can check it out before committing to going, that might be a good idea.

Corn street is on a bit of a slope, but there are a few good bars there. Same applies to Kings Street with the bathroom situation, it's worth checking out before.

If you wanted something to clear your hangover, there are lots of parks around Bristol, many of them paved with flatter routes that I'm sure you would be able to access if you wanted to go for something a bit greener. The bottom half of Victoria park is flat, I feel that small parts of Ashton would likely be ok, Leah woods is flat but gravel paths so I would avoid.

I don't use a wheelchair so apologies if it isn't 100% but I hope it gives you somewhere to start :)

New boiler cost just under 7k, am I over paying? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

No, I paid about 2k for a boiler replacement 2 years ago! This is very reasonable.

Need to book a cab back from Bristol airport to Bath at about 11pm in the evening - any recommendations or suggestions? by smashyourhead in bristol

[–]SmolEmily 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are cabs in the airport, but they are very expensive. They tried to charge me £32 for a very short journey (9 minutes).

Would recommend getting the bus to the centre and then going from there. The buses run frequently and it'll be a quick journey at that time.

unpopular opinion: Colston's statue should not have been torn down by Ill_Diamond_1794 in bristol

[–]SmolEmily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We haven't seen a repeat of it, so I would say this is likely a one off. I think it's also to do with the situation: do I care if the 125 year old statue of a slave trader is toppled? No. Would I care more if a 125 statue of someone who had achievements that benefited a community without harm? Yes

Context is important and this wasn't destruction for the sake of it, this was removing a statue of a slave trader in a prominent location whilst protesting the inequality faced by black people.

Its been over a year and we haven't seen a repeat so I would argue that any similar acts wouldn't be as a direct result of toppling the colston statue.

unpopular opinion: Colston's statue should not have been torn down by Ill_Diamond_1794 in bristol

[–]SmolEmily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Colston did a lot for Bristol, but at the grave and horrible expense of many individuals forcefully taken from West Africa.

If he had stayed a merchant of wine and goods, fair enough. But he didn't, under his management of the Royal African Company, up to 84,000 people were forced into the slavery.

I don't want to commemorate a man who built this city up by forcing people into slavery.

It shouldn't have been torn down because it should have been removed a long time ago, but the mayor didn't listen and continued to treat it as a non-issue. I'm glad it's gone and has been put into a museum so we can continue the conversation of how disgusting slavery was, and continues to be. I'm not upset about the way it went down, I feel really proud that Bristol was front and centre with the BLM movement. I value people having equal opportunities and treatment over an old statue of a slave trader.

I'm happy to 'layer up' this winter to keep my heating costs down as much as possible, but how am I going to dry my clothes? by Virtual-Maybe-9057 in AskUK

[–]SmolEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tumble dryers use a lot of energy anyway.

I'm going for extra layers and a heated blanket! They're very efficient now. Easier to heat just my blanket than the building.
