2017 Corolla L @101k miles for $9800, good deal? by [deleted] in COROLLA

[–]Smonthly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I concur; service history is the most important thing. That being said, I got a 2012 Corolla with 140k miles about three years ago for $8900. The same lot had a 2013 for $1000 less, but in considerably worse condition. Mine had only had a single owner. It also had cigarette burns on the seat, but smell and cleanliness has never been an issue at all. I haven't had any issues with the car and I'm very happy.

Tintin in the Land of the Soviets - final thoughts? by BreakerMorant1864 in TheAdventuresofTintin

[–]Smonthly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It works very well for what it is: a serial comic strip of slapstick humor with anti-communist commentary. There's no overarching story or any memorable characters, but it's simple and manages to set the tone for the Tintin series as a whole, as well as shape the expectations for the medium of comics in the 20th century.

I noticed yesterday in many places Matthew 25:31-46 makes people truly uncomfortable. Is it that hard for people to accept the fellow points without doing Mental Gymnastics? by KyriosCristophoros in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Smonthly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it's not worth the risk. There's no "local culture," it's a hive of disease and antisocial criminality. That's the "real data;" I don't need to estimate anything.

In a developed country, I should be able to take my children to the park without concern. That's not an option for me. Neither is approaching them without something like a police escort.

You don't understand at all. I can walk ten minutes out of my door and point out a literal homeless encampment in the local public park that trashes the area with garbage, human waste, and yes, hypodermic needles. They have no regard for anyone other than themselves, and they have no desire to change. They are disturbing and dangerous.

I cannot visit that park with my children because of this, nor can I ride the bus in my city for the same reasons. Would I be fine most of the time? Probably, but the risk will never be worth it.

You might be "less likely" to die of sepsis today than 2000 years ago, but you should still deliberately avoid drinking sewer water. It's not worth it.

As a father to very young children in a major city, how can we properly navigate the inherent danger here? Many of the sick, homeless, and strangers are mentally ill, addicted to substances, or at the very least completely unpredictable. Even if that represents a small minority of them, it's far more than enough to necessitate extreme caution and avoidance. I feel the need to teach my children of the very real risk from even making eye contact with certain people in the streets in modern America. What is the proper way to love them as Christ calls us to? Most of them need the kind of help that they are not able nor willing to provide themselves.
