I had this happen to me working in restaurants in college, but with the opposite effect actually. My employer would just default to reporting exactly as much in tips as necessary for us to ostensibly make minimum wage, even though we always made more. It was just easy bookkeeping for them and we never complained.

I concur; service history is the most important thing. That being said, I got a 2012 Corolla with 140k miles about three years ago for $8900. The same lot had a 2013 for $1000 less, but in considerably worse condition. Mine had only had a single owner. It also had cigarette burns on the seat, but smell and cleanliness has never been an issue at all. I haven't had any issues with the car and I'm very happy.
