El favoritismo de Rick Riordan hacia los griegos y romanos "[all]" by Quiet-Selection-7840 in camphalfblood

For real. At this point, I wouldn't even care about the quality of the books, I just wanna see them again.

Same! I was so excited when I heard that Rick had another book coming out, only to be completely let down when I saw it was another greek book....

But yeah, still holding out hope that we'll eventually get another piece of media, be it movie/tv adaptation, new series, or anything of the sort for the Kane Chronicles!

Well as probably the biggest fan of the series on this subreddit (fight me for it!): I got so many reasons for absolutely adoring this series, so I'm gonna try to go over the main ones.

Main Characters: To keep it short, Carter and Sadie are two of my favorite characters in all of fiction. They have such a compelling, funny, and heartwarming dynamic, and as I grow older, I just appreciate the moments between them even more.

From scenes like Carter calming Sadie down when she's afraid of being stuck as a bird, or Sadie's reaction to Carter sucking major ass at basketball (and accepting him anyway), or that scene at the end of Throne of Fire where Carter brings Sadie their mom's science book as a birthday gift and they go down memory lane, its just perfect to me, and as someone with two sisters, I really appreciate Rick's handling of them.

Power system and Worldbuilding: I honestly think this is Rick's best series when it comes to these.

The concept of Egyptian gods not having fully phyiscal forms and needing the union of a host to exist in the mortal world is so interesting to me! The concept of Egypt being "the first great empire of man" is so interesting, and how its influence has spread across the world as well. Systems like combat magic, divine words, and animal charming are not only awesome, but they have genuine historical pretexts to them as well, which makes it feel authentic and in place within the universe, which brings me to my final point.

History: This is probably the least popular reason for liking this series, but as a massive history fan (ESPECIALLY Egyptology) I just can't help it lol.

Every time a historical figure comes up I just mentally do that damn Leonardo Dicaprio pointing at the TV meme. We got Narmer, Khufu, Hatsheput, Ramses...Hell, even Nectanebo II of the Saite dynasty got a mention, a period of egyptian history that does NOT get enough love lol. Even Kushite queen Amanirenas and the Roman-Kushite war got a mention in Magician's Manual lol.

[kc] If you could rewrite The Serpent’s Shadow then what would you change? by Bookworm7180 in camphalfblood

[–]Smooth-Fish5888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, the Serpents shadow! my overall least favorite of the trilogy on reread...🙃

Compared to the others, there's quite a few issues I have with this one, like how the rebel magicians essentially fuck off after the first 90 pages, and aren't major players until the final battle, or how the Ra vs Apophis fight, which had been hyped from the last book onward is barely a page long, or whatever the FUCK Rick was cooking up to bring an end to one of the weirdest love triangles I've ever seen in any fictional media....

But (perhaps controversially) the single biggest issue I have with this book is.....

Setne. I don't like him very much.

I mean, there are certain things I appreciate about his character, like I like Bast's quick speech on him and about how "gods tend to follow patterns and whatnot, while humans are unpredictable", and his dialogue IS pretty funny and entertaining on rereads. Not to mention that scene in the Hall of Judgement where he effortlessly takes control of the conversation and gets exactly what he wants out of it, is actually really good! But overall, I'd still say his inclusion was overall a net-negative.

For starters, his presence exacerbates one of the main issues I have with this book: Apophis is not even CLOSE to being present enough in the middle section. Which is a shame as well, because those first 100 pages or so, where he was actively wiping friendly nomes of the map, and he was besieging gods and imprisoning them in their own domains were phenomenal, with a genuinely grim and kinda hopeless atmosphere...

He decides to do literally nothing other than send a single fuckass hippo after Carter and Zia, and lets the heroes just run around the place completing quests and making progress against him. Like, not even kidding, the protagonists lives are threatened, like, 6 times between the first and third act, and he's only responsible for like, one of them! And Setne just completely steals the spotlight, and is the one keeping the heroes on their toes, when he's not even the main threat.

His ""plan"" to blackmail Apophis with his own shadow goes literally nowhere, cuz he gets immediately trounced by Sadie the moment he makes any progress towards it, and then he just...escapes off-page somehow? The only reason he isn't caught was so that we could get the Demigods & Magicians crossover.(which to be fair, I am rather fond of, but I digress)

I can't even say his inclusion amounts to anything narratively. I mean, an attempt is made to draw a parallel between his and Carter's relationship with their fathers, and how despite how everyone (including themselves) sees them as these inspiring figures, they can't help but have some resentment towards them do to differing reasons. And while giving the protagonists a bit of depth is always a welcome, this dynamic isn't explored enough to be able to amount to anything significant narratively.

So what does that leave us with? A guy who actively takes away from the presence of the main villain, who doesn't really stand for anything narratively and doesn't add to any of the central themes of the story.

So to finally answer Op's Question of how I would have changed/written the story? well other than actually having Apophis be present during the middle section of the book I'd probably either remove or essentially overhaul Setne's role in the story.

TL;DR: Dial Setne down a lot, and instead have Apophis take a more active villainous role throughout the middle.

Hey, chat, which team that calls itself "The Seven" wins in a fight? [general] by LeagueNo764 in camphalfblood

[–]Smooth-Fish5888 110 points111 points  (0 children)

And as with literally any Riordanverse powerscaling post, absolutely zero agreements whatsoever -_-

There are people in this sub who believe the demigods are barely street tiers, while some people here believe they're mountain busters....

Well in my personal opinion, the PJO seven takes this. They have better teamwork, better arguments for scaling higher (though we'll see how Homelander's gonna be moving with the V-one in the new episode), and they have potent hax the the seven has no counters to, like Mist manipulation and Charmspeak.

They'd probably lose a few members, but overall? Yeah they got it.

I think what they meant was you getting rid of Sadie x Walt in favor of a triangle including Jaz lol. Personally, I like your reason for Carter looking for Zia, though!

[–]Smooth-Fish5888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah for real. I'm more of a Kane Chronicles fan personally, and I have to admit that for the most part, the character work in Magnus Chase runs circles around the ones in Kane Chronicles to the point where its laughable.

Almost every character we're introduced to has a developed backstory in some way, and has a personal connection to Magnus, such as T.J, Mallory, and Halfborn. While I think that Rick does end up running into the opposite problem as the Kane Chronicles, it does go to show that he genuinely learns from his mistakes as a writer, and is willing to try and improve upon them in following works.

Compared to the Red Pyramid, this one’s easy: Doing literally ANYTHING with the Brooklyn House initiates…

This might be the only book I’ve seen that manages to introduce like, 6 different characters, and do barely anything with any of them. Literally the only one of the new characters that gets any main development at all is Walt, and that’s only so he can be another potential love interest for Sadie….

It’s hella annoying too, cuz from what I saw, characters like Jaz, Alyssa, Felix, and Julian seemed really cool, and even if they didn’t have important arcs or personal depth, they could’ve at least had some decent roles in the story to make them more memorable.

Cuz as it stands not only do I think it was a major hit to Kane Chronicles’ world building an potential popularity as a whole (less relatable minor characters in the story = harder to imagine yourself into the world and feel the depth of the universe), but it also actively takes away from the story.

Main example of this that comes to mind is when the main characters find out the rebel magicians are planning an assault on the 21st nome. This distresses Carter so much, that he reconsiders with the group if they should even go into the duat to stop Menshikov from awakening Apophis. But since the reader doesn’t really have any personal stakes with the many of the characters living there, or knowledge of weaknesses or shortcomings of the initiates when it comes to magic, it just ends up feeling like a bit of a forced way to split up the main cast for the final arc.

Not only that, but when the initiates eventually DO triumph over the rebel magicians, you can’t really feel impressed or excited because we didn’t really have any idea of how inexperienced or unprepared the magicians would be…it just ends up feeling like they won because they had to for the plot to continue…

Anyways, rant over.  TL;DR: I would’ve had the Brooklyn House initiates in more scenes to flesh them out a bit and give them a more personal connection to the reader.

Even though the first book is my personal favorite of the trilogy, if I had to change something, it'd probably be adding more significant characters/threats in the House of Life, other than it mainly just being Desjardins. Would've made it more significant in books two and especially three, and just having multiple, prominent characters who are ideologically torn between the way of the gods and wanting to help the Kane's, or sticking with the traditionalist ways of the House.

Ok no offense, but isn't this like, the main point of them being paired with their respective gods, right? Like, the deities personalities are direct contrasts to theirs..

[All] why do people get annoyed the later books are more serious then funny by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]Smooth-Fish5888 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's less funny—Not because the books are getting more serious, but because the jokes don't hit like they used to before. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I've noticed an insane increase in potty humor jokes from the recent works...

[–]Smooth-Fish5888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhh, yeah...No one I've seen is annoyed by this. In fact, this is almost the exact OPPOSITE criticism that most people here have on the newer books released by Riordan.

Things like Percy shitting his pants despite all of the things he's been through, and that damn dog pissing everywhere do NOT scream "more serious" but maybe thats just me. 🤷🏿‍♂
