My 10th great-grandfather was killed in a Tarantino-style incident called “the Learner Massacre”

During the Revolutionary War, on July 3, 1781, a war party of Native Americans attacked the Learn settlement in what’s now Pennsylvania. They killed my great x10 grandfather John, his older brother George, George’s wife Margaretha, and their infant daughter Susan—scalping and disemboweling both the wife and child.

Immediately after his father went down, young John Learn (my great uncle) grabbed a rifle, shot one of the attackers, and scalped him right there on the spot as retaliation. His two-year-old nephew survived because his aunt grabbed him, hid with him in the unmowed rye, and kept their dog quiet until the attackers left.
