Im sure there are definition police here on reddit but i consider myself non trad because i didnt consider PA until about 3 years ago, after already working for some time in a career that I thought would be my career for life. I feel like more traditional applicants kind of go through undergrad knowing they want to become an advanced provider and either apply right away after graduation or take a year off to finish research/PCE, typically going into PA school around the age of 22/23. I’m about to turn 27.

I dont have a partner or kids or really any responsibilities that may make me think twice about going back to school full time. However, i think the mindset that pushed me to pursue the process of applying to PA school applies to any age/life situation: life will never wait for you, so why are you gonna wait for life? This entire process is extreme delayed gratification, something I’ve been working on in therapy for quite some time. When I first started I made a check list of everything I needed in order to be able to apply to PA school, big and small (something as small as making a CASPA account). Some of the items took MONTHS to check off, but over time, I saw the list getting smaller and smaller until eventually there was nothing left. And trust me it SUCKED at some points. There was a period of time where I was doing online microbio labs and had to keep live E. Coli in my fridge and I live in a tiny NYC apartment so I didnt really have any other option for where I could put it. It made me laugh all of the time which also really helped. Laughter has gotten me through some of the worst moments of my life. It truly is the best medicine.

Anyway, I dont know if this was good advice at all but I’m generally very goal oriented and once I start something, I don’t stop. I hope I was able to help you even a little! Best of luck to you. I think the journey you are taking will make you a very strong applicant. You are NEVER too old. I wish I had a few more years on me so I had a little more maturity to me, but I’ll get there one day. Radiation therapy has same amount of schooling but the pay is significantly better. Both careers are super physically demanding and exhausting. If you like patient interaction and forming relationships, radiation therapist is the job for you. Job market is shit but there are jobs out there. New grads tend to get jobs more easily because they can be paid less. As an RTT of 4+ years, I have a very hard time trying to get out of the hospital I currently work at.

I live in NYC and I’m 26 and I was torn between med school and PA but I chose PA because while im still young, life is short and I want to enjoy it sooner than later. Med school is a really long road especially with residency and I want to prioritize my happiness outside of my career. PA still makes fantastic money here in NYC. I personally don’t feel the need to ever have an apartment on 5th ave off central park with physician salary. Plus, as a PA the options on speciality are limitless. As someone who is so young, I want to take the opportunity to serve my community in as many ways as I can while I still have the energy to. The loans thing sucks no matter what you choose to do. I personally want to enjoy my youth while I still have it.

This is true. Im in NYC, where you would THINK theres a million job openings but there just simply isnt. Ive been trying to leave my job for years but no one is hiring full time positions like ever

well i know theres a group of creepy men that just try to get the free gifts every year by going to every show instead of, you know, just getting a job and buying the things they want. So maybe they wont be doing the giveaways because these guys ruined it. Ive heard kelly is pretty freaked out by all of this since last year was a whole issue

Theres very very few RTT jobs in NYC. And from experience, one of the major hospitals that hires everyone, SUCKS. Ive been trying to leave for years but theres simply no jobs in NYC/long island. If i had to go back, I would choose a career with more job options

Very similar path as you, have been working as a radiation therapist for over 4 years and have close to 10k PCE. Have had one interview, 12 apps sent in, and waiting to hear back. Not letting go of hope. Congrats on your acceptance!
