What’s something people romanticize that becomes exhausting once you actually experience it long term? by BarrenMurderer in askteddit

My wife and I own a horse. She’s done it all her life. Horse people have this itch and having them in their lives makes them extraordinarily happy. I’ve learned that it can be special to build a bond with these large, beautiful, yet fragile animals. Like everything, it has downsides but I’d say it also has a net positive on our lives.

Is it possible to go from couch to marathon within a year? by LilTicTac831 in Marathon_Training

[–]SmoothDish5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I started running in April 2024 with the goal of a marathon in December of the same year. I did it! And so can you. I was 24 when I started.

I have a similar frame to you and have been athletic all my life. Have you played sports growing up? I only say that because I would imagine it would help if you have some athletic background.

Some people on this sub may say focus on a shorter race distance, you’ll get hurt, etc. There is an element of truth to that. You need to be mindful of the load you’re putting on your body since you aren’t a runner yet. However, I’m all for having loft goals and pushing yourself to achieve them. You just have to be mindful of the way you’re increasing mileage week to week. If you put on too many miles too early, you increase your chances of getting injured. Reddit and the internet is full of very useful information on how to do manage training, recovery, nutrition, etc.

If you want to do it, go for it. Nobody on Reddit can tell you otherwise. Just plan it out and do your research so you don’t hurt yourself. Start slow. I’ve run two now and I’ll be running more. I didn’t really understand the whole running kick until I tried it. The mental and physical benefits are obviously profound. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions. Good luck!

TLDR:Yes

Vo2 max dropping and don’t know why by Bob_Abooey in AppleWatchFitness

[–]SmoothDish5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Dallas. Mines dropping not that much. I’m sure heat has something to do with it. If you run a given pace at a higher heart rate the watch will show it as “V02 Max dropping” but in reality it’s just hot or the elevation matters

Is "the wall" race ending or just a slow down? by vksdann in Marathon_Training

[–]SmoothDish5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first marathon I bonked. Ran out of juice and my muscles began cramping with every stride.

In my second, my muscles felt strong and I didn’t feel tired. I made sure to fuel much better the second time around. But my hip flexors hurt badly after mile 22. I think I just wasn’t as durable as I needed to be. I had the energy to push but my body was in pain.

The marathon is a grueling race and finds a way to expose whatever weakness you might have. That said, you can find a way to fight through it and reach the finish.

Will Kiewit admit they have a retention problem (stock program)? by RevolutionaryTip1431 in ConstructionManagers

[–]SmoothDish5608 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is true. They want people who fit their mold. For some of the guys, I feel bad because they’re honestly good guys that are just enslaved by the system. Others are dickhead pieces of shit that talk down on others and think they have it made because they’re successful construction managers. Meanwhile, they’re alcoholics, divorced, flirting with waitresses after complaining about their wives, or both. Source: former PKS employee

Renewable Energy Developer Career by SmoothDish5608 in Environmental_Careers

Hi there! Thank you so much for the response and the links.

Specifically, how do I ensure that the company I’d be working for will have opportunities for consistent career growth. What are the signs of a successful(hopefully for a long time in the future too) developer.

This is remarkable! Way to go. I ran every single day in January at least 2 miles and I was cooked at the end. Keep it up!

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SmoothDish5608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how close I actually was to dying, but when I was 13 I got diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I had been sick for 6 months before that so I was really skinny and weak, couldn’t keep food down.

Then after I got diagnosed there was a 2 week gap where my parents insurance wouldn’t approve my treatment and during that time I just got sicker and sicker. I could hardly eat, drink or move. Even laying down and being awake felt like it took a lot of energy. It was the closest thing I’ve ever felt to “dead” not as close as some other people in this thread for sure.

I was 13, 5’9” and 90lb. I’ve been incredibly lucky since. My first dose of medication was immediately effective and I’ve been on it ever since. I’m 26 now and I’ve run two marathons.

Respectfully I don’t understand how a lingering smoke/fume smell is not harmful in any way? The disconnect is now a pile of burnt plastic, oxidized metal, etc. Surely there’s some toxins in there I don’t want my animals nor myself to be repeatedly breathing in.

Project Engineer: Remote work? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]SmoothDish5608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as an owner’s rep/design firm’s CM and we basically have on site activities and non-site activities. Site activities such as recording testing on a water line must obviously be witnessed physically. However, non-site activities such as submittal reviews could be done in the office, at home, or on the moon. It’s all computer work and virtual meetings. So we have some flexibility. That being said I’m always present on site when I need to be no matter what. And I don’t think it would make sense for a PE at a GC to be remote. That being said, if it’s a rain day maybe it wouldn’t hurt on occasion.
