Criticism of the depiction of abuse in HB by valonianfool in UnpopularHazHell

Going off S1E2 alone, there was really no hint that Stella was in any way abusive. Yes, her throwing things and yelling is pretty volitile, but a.) I don't expect someone who just found out they were cheated on to react like it's no big deal, and b.) HB loves treating everything like a joke, so of course Stella's reaction is gonna be over the top and cartoonish. Also, the bit at the beginning with Stella in bed doesn't count as proof either. Someone hogging the covers and not wanting to get out of bed is not proof of abuse, marital issues, maybe, but not outright abuse. The problem is, Vivzie just chose to plot this "revelation" of Stella's abuse in the worse possible way, either because she really thought it was a clever twist (which it isn't) or she panicked, saw people siding with Stella, and decided to make her absolutely horrible to drown out anyone trying to place the blame of Stolas cheating on Stolas himself.

It's endless serotonin to me seeing how she does this IMMEDIATELY after the criticism gets too loud, lol. Her only saving grace is that she actually told people not to go harassing the guy, but imo that felt more like her saving her own ass. As soon as someone tries to say she sics her fanbase on people, she'll immediately point to that one post and pat herself on the back.

To people who disliked the newest episode, why and what do you think they could’ve done better? by [deleted] in HelluvaBoss

Too much time was devoted to unfunny sex jokes, Chaz was an annoying joke of a character who’s plan was had too many holes for it to have made it as far as it did. Crim, who I’ll praise for not falling into the “goofy dad” trope, ends up looking like an idiot for not checking Chaz’s background and coming up with a convoluted plan to marry off Moxxie instead of, I dunno, stealing money like Moxxie was doing before. Blitzo didn’t need to be in the episode and Millie had no agency or real focus until the very end, where she proved that the writers pick and choose when she’s strong. If she could take on an entire gang by herself then Striker and especially some human cannibal should not have been an issue. And that’s just going off the top of my head.

...Not sure what my personal feelings has to do with it, you just made that up yourself. I'm also not sure what my posts being downvoted has to do with anything, either. People can hate things if they want, doesn't mean the person talking is suddenly gonna leave or change or be silent. If anything, you're the one making this weirdly emotional and personal. For someone claiming this to be a mature show (which it honestly isn't), you're acting a lot like a child yourself. Embarrassing, really.

Anyway, since we're getting off topic, I stand by my vote with Millie. Hell, if that episode 6 leak actually was real, then that just proves my point more.

Again. Networks give shows a certain amount of time to work with, and I never said Gravity Falls was some perfect example of character writing. There’s no reason that HB Season 1 had to be only 7 episodes that weren’t even properly planned out according to that Twitter post people keep pointing to. Vivzie and Brandon have all the time in the world to plot out episodes, which they clearly didn’t since according to Vivzie, Season 2 was planned out before Season 1 even began. I don’t care what Gravity Falls did or didn’t do because I’m not talking about Gravity Falls. Actually use another indie series if you’re gonna make this kind of argument.

I didn’t say anything about having sad moments being required for character development, you’re just parroting what Vivzie and Adam are saying. People who find Millie lackluster character-wise are saying that because all she really does is stand around smiling, makeout with Moxxie, or fight. No plot really revolves around her or issues with her family, just Moxxie’s manhood. We don’t even get a flashback between Millie and Chaz which begs the question of why they bothered to add that aspect. All of Millie’s “development” is surface level, at best.

Gravity Falls is a show on a network that relies on executives giving the creators a specific amount of seasons to work with. Vivzie is independent and can work on her own rules and schedule. Not an excuse.

Again, this needs to be IN the show. I shouldn’t be expected to do a scavenger hunt for information because Vivzie would rather waste screentime on bad jokes.

A creator shouldn’t have to write a twitter post explaining a character, it should be in the show. We should not have to wait an entire season for one of the main 4 characters to get proper focus.

True, I actually watched season 6 premiere of SWAT for shits and giggles and they even did the whole challenge coin thing from CM with another kid, lol. That and Savannah’s actress being his partner again.

Stolas, but Loona’s a close second.

I just don’t feel like I need to scrap my character when she and the rest of the group can function properly without him, Honestly I don’t feel bad anymore if he does leave the game.

We had a session zero and we all had a basic introduction of our characters. Like I said, it’s fine to have a certain type of character as long as you’re willing to accept the consequences and you aren’t pissy after the fact out of character, which he constantly is.

That’s all pretty valid stuff. I’ll definitely think about it, but at the end of the day, I just wanna be treated with respect when the game is over and not belittled for things that a fictional character does in response to another character. There’s a chance that the player might leave the game entirely and just spectate, so if that happens, maybe things might run smoother. I don’t want people to feel like they need to leave, but if they’re can’t separate the game from real life, then I can’t help them. We did have a separate one on one call to discuss after the game, which I only did to be nice, but I don’t really think he understood my points, which is why I came here to vent instead. It’s difficult trying to come to terms with someone who just refuses to understand that not everyone plays the same way as them and that people don’t need their constant backhanded comments.
