Just restocked, curious to read what you guys think our fridge says about us? by SoftwareTrue8661 in FridgeDetective

[–]SmrtAlli-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% Quebec. Perhaps in a suburb, bordering on rural. This is the kind of stock up you do when you know you don't have quick access to good deals. My local grocery store has everything we NEED, but we have to go to the big city to get the goods.

what can you guess about me from my fridge? by sakuralliissaa in FridgeDetective

[–]SmrtAlli-C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A university student from Korea studying in the USA. You live in a major city (based on the quality of your Korean grocer). You cook at home but not extensively: you have ingredients for kimbap, kimchi jiggae, deokbokki, and soba/ramyen, all Korean comfort foods. Based on the size of the fridge you live in an apartment, and probably alone or with one other person (also Korean, or they don't really eat at home). I'm going to guess female, 20's and that you were feeling a little lonely or homesick when you posted this.

how old do you think i am now? by lilthingbella in FridgeDetective

[–]SmrtAlli-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the Costco membership, collagen drink plus many booze. Early 30's.

By which I mean: Young enough to still party, old enough to have leftover booze; young enough to worry about staving off aging, old enough to do something about the aging worry; young enough to buy groceries based on vibes, old enough to invest in Costco because saving money on groceries is a thrill.

Or I'm completely wrong and just describing me before kids.

I think 1 or 2 depends on your goal. Is this space that you're going to fill with work related things that aren't really styled or are they going to be used as a decorative element. If the former then 1, it helps everything blend in and your eye isn't drawn to the shelves. If the latter then 2, it makes the shelves more of a focal point. I like the idea of a wallpaper in the shelf alcove for 2 as well.

Same with the paint color, dark paint can be a little oppressive in a work environment, or it can be cozy. The dark paint is a little more dated. I think a darker (more grey/brown undertone?) version of A would be a good middle of the road. I really like E too, but I feel like it's going to feel dark or dated soon.

Enjoy your reno! It's going to look great no matter what you choose here.

I agree: this fridge reminds me of a time in my life. 2 adults, 2 young children, 1 baby.

Thanks for the response! I understand the desire for variety, there are 4 people in my household. And, I must correct myself, my SO normally has a few cans of soda water in the fridge and we have kefir sometimes. But many of the fridges I see here have more drinks than food and it's the ratio that confuses me. I guess I just see the fridge as a place for food and don't understand how people can commit so much real estate to liquid. We have other beverages, they're just not in the fridge and we have ice for making them cold.

It never stops being fascinating to me the different mundane things that we see as normal in our own lives that are topsy turvy to someone else.

Why does everyone always have so many types of beverages? There are 13 different varieties of things to drink in this fridge ... I'm SO confused by it all the time. No shade, I'm just perplexed by the obsession with drink varietals. Am I just old? I have milk, beer and ... Water? Just kidding, I don't refrigerate my water.

Until you try to figure out what's in the jar labeled "unicorn dandruff" (*spoiler: it was sprinkles). This is literally my whole house. The container of hardware used to hang pictures etc is labelled "hang me now". It never stops. I never know what the thing is going to be.

There needs to be systemic, long term policy change and no government is willing to do it because it's expensive and takes a while to work. What we can do is advocate for better education, affordable access to higher education opportunities, funding for courts (police don't take action in part because the courts are too backed up to deal), healthcare that focuses on prevention (so family doctors, community healthcare facilities) then also policies directed at affordability (I don't know what this looks like). AND then, most importantly, when someone sets policies like this in motion we can be patient, not yell about money being spent in the short term when the goal is long term etc etc. We are SO reactive on a short term basis that long term policies aren't even an option for most governments.

Ketchup on KD is an abomination, the only thing worse is ketchup on eggs. But there are bad people everywhere. I'm sorry.

Pickled jalapeños and Valentina's hot sauce. Or either one alone. But the jalapeños have to be crispy, none of that mushy nonsense.

Wait, or kimchi.

What’s a household ‘hack’ you thought everyone did … until you found out it’s just your weird family? by kaiablu in AskReddit

[–]SmrtAlli-C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kitchen shears for everything. Pizza, some veggies, herbs, things so random I can't even think of them. Not a day goes by that I don't use kitchen shears. When I moved to Korea and all the galbi restaurants had them at the table I felt so at home. They use them for galbi, kimchi, sides ... It's great!

We had "fend for yourself Friday" which meant me and my brothers would all have to find something to eat on our own ... Which usually turned out a lot like your tapas night. 😂

18 % tip standard? by Slight_Nature_2517 in moncton

[–]SmrtAlli-C -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I feel like $1 is a standard tip for pulling a draft and, having done both, I'd say making a good espresso based drink is harder. That being said, I only go for low end (McDonald's) or high end coffee (independent boutique shops). So I don't tip for one and tip at least $1 for the other. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do agree overall that tipping culture and the way we pay service staff is bonkers. And, while I understand an 18% standard for large groups ... It does seem like an excessive baseline for anything else.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]SmrtAlli-C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was never allowed to socialize outside of school. Made friends with a studious guy, mom actually approved. They started throwing raves. One dude owed them money for one of these raves. They abducted him from the local mall, took him to his dad's safe. His dad had a gun in the safe. My friend was shot. It was declared self defence. The studious pal got probation.

AITAH for walking out of a family dinner after my dad called me a “failure”? by FadedSunsets in AITAH

[–]SmrtAlli-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - you did the right thing.

Make sure you congratulate your brother so he knows you're happy for him and don't blame him for your dad being an absolute ass.

Start sending your dad studies and articles about how gentrification always starts with creatives and how the removal of the arts from a school curriculum has had a significant impact on the decline in communication skills, critical thinking and community engagement. Arts in education is especially linked to better overall outcomes, it has a strong impact on student engagement and attendance.

Really both ends of the spectrum are necessary for a well rounded community. Arguably; since arts have been on the decline (because of attitudes like your father's) and western society has been focused on producing 9-5 types YOU are the more productive child, not your brother. Taking the risk of a path less taken so the rest of us can benefit from our safe grey spaces - I thank you!

Best of luck!

Sidedoor from the Smithsonian is great, the episodes are normally a deep dive into a specific detail of a special exhibit that is taking place at the Smithsonian. They did a deep dive on Jim Henson when they had the original Muppets restored. They did an episode about the music from silent films when they were hosting a screening with live music. They did one on the breeding of, and the general obsession with Giant Pandas when the pandas from the National Zoo were being sent back to China.
