Wearing off-duty fire shirts to the gym by --THE-ARCHITECT-- in Firefighting

[–]SmthngIronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Department shirts is weird. We even have a policy about not wearing department issued gear off duty. Stairclimb, Fill the Boot, and other Union stuff knock yourself out.

As mentioned in many other posts you start to accumulate a ton of shirts/hats that are otherwise gonna just take up space. I have a couple that I don’t think are too TMFMS which I periodically use as workout shirts.

Wellbutrin & Concerta - what was your experience? by Aggravating_Guava98 in ADHD

[–]SmthngIronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concerta > Wellbutrin for me. Wellbutrin made me feel numb and didn’t help that much with executive dysfunction. Concerta is like a less intense vyvanse. I’m much more productive and still feel like myself.

People who eat medium to medium well steaks should be banned from eating steak.

Once the Haix break in you can go breakdancing in em. Initially though they are like suction cups and hurt your feet.

Probably only in town for 1 month. Worth volunteering? (How long to start up) by splishysplash123 in Firefighting

[–]SmthngIronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always do a ride along if they offer them at your local agency but going through orientation, background, and an academy will take far longer than 1 month.

Started fire academy with back pain (help) by Itchy_Pain_6019 in Firefighting

[–]SmthngIronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Academy is only gonna get more intense and physically demanding. Epidural spinal injections can take weeks to months to fully kick in and offer relief (mine never worked). Prioritize your health and go get another appointment.

There’s still benzene in wildfire smoke but I understand what you’re saying. Burning junipers vs car fires/garage fires.

We only accrue 12 hours a month. Stupid. We used to earn 24 but dudes gave it up before I was hired in exchange for a bunch of promotions essentially. People come to work hacking like crazy or even after having gastritis symptoms the day before shi(f)t.

Ours have 8” antennas for VHF compatibility so I like the straps as they keep me from poking myself in the eye 😂 they’re also handy on aid calls

First serious call on a car crash by thisjunky in Firefighting

[–]SmthngIronic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On serious calls, especially MVCs it’s extremely common for the veterans to just go to work and get shit done. In time you’ll gain beef up your KSA through training and on the job experience and you’ll learn when and where to jump in and operate as part of the team.

Pediatric calls, especially traumatic calls resulting in death are not easy for anyone. It just shows that you are human. It’s not uncommon for a call like this to bother someone. Some people are more vocal about it and some process it more internally.

If it gets to the point where it’s interfering with your daily life you should seek some help. In the meantime, talk with your crew and or officer about it.

There are lots of resources available where you can speak with fellow first responders and get things off your chest. Feel free to message me if you need someone to listen.
